Myung On "When Day And Dream Unite"

I didn't know what section this would be appropriate in which to ask, so tell me if another section would be best. What bass, distortion (and whatever else would be important) did John Myung use on Dream Theatre's first album to get that distinct sound? I love that airy, poppy sound that he has in those recordings.

I think he used a reavily Modified Spector 4 String bass with a PJ configuration . The ' P ' was a reverse pickup .

I'm somewhat new to thus whole thing, so an explanation as to what you mean by "reverse pickup" would be appreciated.

Eh, in the liner notes, it looks like he's using a stingray with an added P pickup which can be sent to a seperate clean channel while the original Pickups are sent to an effected channel.

Also while messing with effects at my guitarrist's house this weekend, I found a tone that's similar, so I'm pretty sure he used a chorus pedal (and probably some distortion as well), I don't know for the whole album, but Status Seeker has lots of Chorus on it.

(Also, I got some hints from Wiki as well). The Spector was for I&W.

Dead on. BTW, he may have used a modified spector, and yes you're also right about the Images and Words album on a spector, with the addition of a 5 string bass, I do not know what bass that was though.

In interviews, he has said that was his first bass that he bought.

I'm pretty sure that Myung only started using Tung basses after the album was recorded, due to seeing him use Tung basses in some of their live videos, such as Live at the Marquee, etc. But I could be wrong, because I'm very sure that he used a 5 string on a FEW parts in the recording of Images and Words.
