So when alot of people think of Rob Trujillo they think of the guy from Metallica now and many haven't heard his work in Infectious Grooves/Suicidal Tendencies. Sure he's not unknown but the man has serious chops and here's your chance to hear it(because its unlikely you'll hear it in Metallica). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fikFPX6KLdE

Between JPJ and Entwistle, you've got all your roots covered. A buddy of mine suggests going further back to the R&B that those guys considered their influences but I think they changed the game enough that you can't learn things the same way they did. They just went THAT much further with it.
On the other hand, you have to consider what you're into. If you want to learn some wicked speed/technical stuff, Billy Sheehan/Mr. Big is the way to go. If you want to throw some rock-style tapping in, go for Marcel Jacob/Talisman. Geddy Lee is a solid rock bass player as well, everyone should listen to Rush. Mike Starr and Mike Inez of AIC and Tim Commerford/RATM/Audioslave are solid too. Les Claypool is another game-changer. His percussive style holds many secrets to how you can manipulate the purpose of the bass in a band. Slap/Pop fans should hunt down TM Stevens and Flea/RHCP. If you want to hide in the pocket and groove all day, check into Jeff Ament/Pearl Jam, Dan Maines/Clutch, or Arion Salazar/Third Eye Blind. Really want to sing with the instrument? Check out Justin Chancellor/Tool or Arif/Protest the Hero. Troy Sanders of Mastodon is a solid bassist, not challenging the scene much but certainly does his job very well.
Those are just what I can think of off the top of my head... |

Tiran Porter (Doobie Brothers from '72 to '80, when they were good)
Had some monster tone and smooth riffing.

OK, my turn, Paul McCartney with the Beatles (my favorite era is Revolver through Abbey Road) |

Going back a few posts, I dug the heck out of that Zero 7! Lots of nice texture and tones. The bassist was clearly present in the mix, with some tasty non-boring lines, but still understated and foundational.
Every bassist should check out Pino's work on Gary Numan's album "I, Assassin": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRhCk...eature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1qVX...eature=related |
