I always liked Neil Murray. Solid bassist, pretty underrated.

He's in at No. 2 on my list (Jack Bruce has the top slot). I loved what he did with the early Whitesnake stuff - especially his lines on the 'Trouble' album. His ability to consistently come up with busy lines that never get in the way of the song is a target I doubt I'll ever hit.

NM is right up there with Andy Fraser & Greg Ridley (Humble Pie) in my book. Absolute buggers to copy

I really dig his bass lines on "Strange New Flash" by Colosseum II.

He plays perfectly on that. What a great rock sound. Simon Phillips is great as always. Wayne Findlay's guitar is silly.
Schenker was wise to get a top shelf rhythm section for his 30th anniversary tour and DVD.

An unheralded prince among bassists. Always loved his work with the criminally underappreciated National Health, before he departed for louder pastures. Incredible taste, fluidity, and dexterity in his playing. Just a quick sample:

Did Neil Murray play on Whitesnake's "Still of the Night"?

I know he's credited as the bassist on that album but I also know there was a lot of tricky business going on regarding credits in those days (i.e., the guy credited on the album didn't always play on the album, or at least songs of it).

Irregardless, the bass line on that song is really nice work although you really have to struggle to hear it. I remember years ago seeing a transcription of it and realizing there was a lot more to it than meets the ear.

Typo - "Strange New Flesh". But yes, agreed totally, great playing by Neil on several tracks from that album.

Apparently Neil was the rehearsal bassist for some nascent sessions that eventually became Bill Bruford's Feels Good To Me debut album. Don't believe he actually appears on any of the album tracks (that's all Jeff Berlin) but man, that woulda been pretty cool to hear!
