I saw the Nels Cline Singers do a blistering set at the Solid Sound Festival this past August -- Devin Hoff was phenomenal on both upright and electric (Jaguar) bass.
Will be seeing NCS again later this week, performing with the Rova Sax quartet as the Celestial Septet.
I see Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, among many projects) is filling bass duties for the Singers now that Hoff has left.
Hoping I'm close enough to the stage to get a good view of gear/effects. Can't wait for the show. |

Nels, Greg Ginn and guys like that (heavy guitar players with an obvious avant garde jazz influence) introduced me to guys like Sonny Sharrock, James Blood Ulmer and Tisziji Munoz, which is cool. And Trevor Dunn is the man, so that should be an awesome show. I just missed the Celestial Septet (Nels Cline Singers along with ROVA saxophone quartet) gig in Philly last night which sucks. Ah well. |

Listening to Zorn's O'o record (Dunn on bass, Ribot, Kenny Baron, other great players), and Banyan (Cline, Watt, Stephen Perkins ) a lot these days, it'll be fun to see/hear what these guys sound like together. Trevor Dunn's Q&a on his website is pretty dang funny too, he don't take no guff... |
