New Bassist! Need some help please

Sign in to disble this ad
I have been playing bass now two weeks. I love it and have been told I am progressing quick. I am using a Yamaha 4 string with passive pickups on a Peavy 50 watt 1x10 combo.

I plan to upgrade my bass once I am more skilled however I do want to go ahead and get a few things.

Here is my list

Qwik Time QT-5 Metronome
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Qwik-Tim...19-i1172058.gc

MXR M182 El Grande Bass Fuzz Pedal
http://www.guitarcenter.com/MXR-M182...81-i1395946.gc

Dunlop Crybaby 105Q Bass Wah Pedal
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Dunlop-C...51-i1124428.gc

Electro-Harmonix Nano Steel Leather Bass Expander Effect Pedal
https://www.guitarcenter.com/Electro...05-i1422001.gc

Electro-Harmonix XO Bass Big Muff PI Distortion Effects Pedal
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Electro-...58-i1422000.gc

Acoustic B200H 200W Bass Head and B115 250W 1x15 Bass Cab Package
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Acoustic...94-i1415333.gc

Acoustic B410 400w 4x10 Bass Cabinet
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Acoustic...45-i1400061.gc

I am looking for suggestions to the gear. I am not rich but am able to buy what is needed, and a few things that I think will be cool and keep me interested.

I play with a guitarist running a 300 watt marshall amp solid state & sometimes his 300 watt Bugera tube amp on a marshall 4x12 My brother is a drummer and plays acoustic drums loud (not miced) They both have turned down there volume but my lil peavy sucks.

So any suggestions are great. I am looking to have fun with this new hobby

I have a suggestion since your are asking for some : Forget the gear ( other than the metronome )
Get a good bearing of your instrument before you go off buying gadgets that won't do much for you other than be a distraction .
If you've been playing for 2 weeks you might want to put that money into music lessons if you aren't already.

Agreed. Plus, after you've been playing a bit more your desires will change, I think you may find you've wasted a bunch of money on a lot of that stuff.

If it were me, I would start building a PA system to use as a bass rig and go DI

Start with a Power amp, Then one decent full range speaker with plenty of bottom, then find a good DI Box and eventually some real speakers and a mixing console.

Some might call that crazy. But not all singers are blessed with a PA and owning the PA gives you a bit of job security and "leverage".

Also a PA can potentially make you money as you can rent it out to people and you can potentially host open-mic jams which will put you into contact with lots of musicians.

Lightbulb Newish Too

Those Acoustics fry man don't get one.maybe get a nice combo b4 you build up a rig. Also, don't get too focused on what u think u want. try gear out, ask the lovely ppl of talkbass their opinion on it and you'll know what you need. has worked splendidly for my 2 years of bass.

With that being said... +1 on crybaby it is sooo funky.

Thanks for all the advice. I plan to spend some money on a new amp though. I have to get a new amp. With that said I am wanting a system that will grow with me with minimal replacement of components. If that makes since lol. To be a little clearer if I buy a 2/10 cab I want to be able to later add on to the cab without replacing gear I currently have.

So any advice on a system (NO PA PLEASE THATS CRAZY LOL)

^ Not necessarily... most heads will run at 8 & 4 ohms... if you get a 210 cab that is 8 ohms, you can add another 8 ohm cab later....

2 weeks huh? Great, we were all there at one moment in time.
Instead of getting pedals I would:
Practice
eat
Practice
eat
Practice
talk to girls
Practice
lift weights
Practice
sell your X-box
Practice
eat
Practice
sell your I-Phone
Practice

THEN BUY EFFECTS

As an old fart, just let me say that if the gig requires more than a Shuttle 6 and a 2x12, I'm gone.

Since you're playing with others (and contrary to what I'm reading, I wholeheartedly endorse joining a band as soon as you can) I'd recommend:

Avatar cab. Really good bang for the buck. I'd recommend a 2x12, but if you want a 4x10, go for it.

Used Shuttle 6 or 9 or MarkBass Little Mark head. Scan the classifieds. Great bang for the buck and lightweight.

Tuner. I prefer Korgs, but YMMV.

If you want effects, I'd recommend a Sans Amp VT pedal so you can approximate an Ampeg SVT.

I wouldn't worry too much about the effects at this point either (unless you are a musician who is just new to bass.. not new to playing music..) .. but like the other old fart I just quoted.. The sans amp is pretty nice.. The classifieds here are great.. and if you still want to do the effects route.. consider a multi pedal.. (There is a Zoom 9.1 goiung for $325 I thyink it was ... ) and lighter weight gear.. I use 212s too and I agree with kraigo, I like the sound. .. I have an Avatar B212.. and a Schroeder 1212L.. both are nice cabs.. but the Avatars IMO are about the best overall bang for the buck ... there are better cabs out there.. but the what you get for what you pay ration on Avatars is PDG.. I also have run both of thoise cabs through a Shuttle 6.0.. and it is a nice fit. I just got a 9.0 from a fellow TBer.. (I also got the Schro, the 6.0, the Gt-10B effects board, the bag I use for the Shuttle, and a Jam Man looper from here too.. with no issuews whatsoever.. ) If you are tryuing to build something you can grow into then you might want to make sure that whatever cas you get are 8 ohm cabs and that whatever head you get will be able to run 2 8 ohm cabs well..

You need to jam with folks. Bassists can't live alone, our job is to groove w other souls.. Everyone seems to spend WAY too much time thinking about gear. Humans are a covetous lot I'm afraid. But remember, everything permanent is free. Honor the music.

I have the B115/B200H, and I really like it. I don't know about them frying, but it has a beefy bottom end and nice highs. I dont really care for effects on bass, so I would spend your money on the amp and forget about the pedals for now. A tuner is a great idea, and a decent cable (no Radio Shack cables...), and maybe some straplocks depending on how active you are while playing. Spend some time learning some of your favorite bass lines, and some classics too (I recommend anything by Flea). It has helped me learn how to create my own bass lines and taught me some cool tricks over the years. Bass is a lot of fun, just start with the basics and go from there.

Forget the effects. Look into getting nice amp and speakers. I saw that someone recommended getting a Shuttle 6 or LMIII and I think that's great advice. The Shuttles can be had for pretty cheap on here nowadays but the 9s seem to be a hot item and are being bought at an astonishing fast rate as of late. A Shuttle and a 12" cab would be a really great way to start and if you need to pick up another 12" later it would be no problem.

And as already said on here practice, practice and practice. Find some music with good quality bass playing to keep your interest piqued as well and to help push you in the right direction. Donny Hathaway "Live" might be a great place to start.
No pedals necessary at this time.
