I realize these artists have been around but.....
It has been my observation that Solo bass/bass playing is evolving or going in new & different directions, in different genres.
I have recently discovered some great artists, that are making music, but not in a typical solo bass/virtuoso way that solo bass has been that I knew it as. Some of it has little or no typical recognizable bass as we know it.
My somewhat recent discoveries include (within the last couple of years)
Lightning Bolt - They blow me away. Crazy videos! Shows once again you don't to have a good singer to have singing that is interesting.
Squarepusher-kind of old now, but I discovered him late, still new to me.
Steve Lawson-Yes, I knew Steve (Tino) from the old days at the pit, for years, but I never really took the time to listen, as he go under a virtuoso solo bassist — which 90% I find boring (except Manring).
I was wrong about Steve, he builds sonic landscapes that, to me is not solo bass, but just amazing music.
Ruiner Severhead-Amazing music, with a wicked biting twist. Solo bass never sounded so cool.
People says that music is stagnant, bass has gone as far as it can go. That's not what I see. The bass is just a tool to be used however one can to express what ever one can. No rules anymore.
Three of the four I discovered from people here-Thanks. |
