I am 36 yo, and subsequently missed out on the early days of Sabbath. I was never really a big fan of solo Ozzy, and Dio-led Sabbath never interested me. However, I have been picking up these $10 "Best-Of " CDs @ Walmart every time I go lately - they are great primers on classics, many different genres - I love them ! So, I picked up "Back Sabbath: 1970 - 1978 Greatest Hits" the other day. WOW ! My only previous exposure to early Sabbath was just the staples like "Iron Man" and "Paranoid". Not only were these songs friggin great, even by modern rock / metal standards, but Geezer....OMG, what an awesome tone! And his technique....obvious who Cliff Burton idolized. I was mesmerized listening to the disc. Anyone else just discovering this grandmaster of metal bass ?

Given that Geezer himself only had Jack Bruce to inspire him I'm surprised with the completely different take on bass he came up with. That tone is pure accident apparently, but he still sounds awesome. I spent ages working on getting that Geezer wub!

| | LICENSED TO KILL - any song I play! | | | | | Sabbath's "Technical Ecstasy" tour. They opened with "Symptom Of The Universe" from "Sabotage" which was (and still is) my favorite album at the time. We had 6th row seats! INCREDIBLE!

Don't disregard Heaven and Hell and Mob rules. Some insane stuff on those albums too. As a matter of fact, Born again is mandatory too.

Yup, Yup.....forgot to mention those two gems. You can really hear Geezers' bass lines starting to evolve into the style of lines that were so dominant and incredible on H&H and M.R. |

Geezer, Steve Harris and Geddy were my first influences... and you can probably throw in John Paul Jones too.
Amazing how Sabbath has stood up to the test of time. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
