New to Geezer - anyone else ?

Sign in to disble this ad
I am 36 yo, and subsequently missed out on the early days of Sabbath. I was never really a big fan of solo Ozzy, and Dio-led Sabbath never interested me. However, I have been picking up these $10 "Best-Of " CDs @ Walmart every time I go lately - they are great primers on classics, many different genres - I love them ! So, I picked up "Back Sabbath: 1970 - 1978 Greatest Hits" the other day. WOW ! My only previous exposure to early Sabbath was just the staples like "Iron Man" and "Paranoid". Not only were these songs friggin great, even by modern rock / metal standards, but Geezer....OMG, what an awesome tone! And his technique....obvious who Cliff Burton idolized. I was mesmerized listening to the disc. Anyone else just discovering this grandmaster of metal bass ?

Welcome to the Darkside

I didn't just get into him but he is one of my biggest influences. I haven't heard a Geezer bassline I didnt like.

+1000

Given that Geezer himself only had Jack Bruce to inspire him I'm surprised with the completely different take on bass he came up with. That tone is pure accident apparently, but he still sounds awesome. I spent ages working on getting that Geezer wub!

The bass playing on old Sabbath is ok but to me what really made those old albums was the guitar work and vocals.

yeah, Geezer amazes me with his tone. Funny thing is, you do not know how busy he actually is until you try to play it note for note. His wah solo before NIB is my fav bass solo of all time. Go Sabbath!!!

Sabbath's "Technical Ecstasy" tour. They opened with "Symptom Of The Universe" from "Sabotage" which was (and still is) my favorite album at the time. We had 6th row seats! INCREDIBLE!

Geezer's one of the principal reasons I picked up a bass. Don't think Sabbath could ever have been as good without him.

Welcome to the world of Geezer. Do yourself a favour and pick up the actual albums. There is a whole lot more you are gonna miss by just getting the best of stuff. Don't disregard Heaven and Hell and Mob rules. Some insane stuff on those albums too. As a matter of fact, Born again is mandatory too.
Enjoy the journey.....Know him. Love him. Live him.

I discovered Geezer when I was just young lad playing bass at age 10. He has been my hero ever since.
Anyone else like his solo stuff?

Yup, Yup.....forgot to mention those two gems. You can really hear Geezers' bass lines starting to evolve into the style of lines that were so dominant and incredible on H&H and M.R.

I'm no stranger to the man so all I'll tell is buy the first six albums, full of busy distorted lines.

Huge influence on me. Picked up all the early Sabbath on vinyl back in the early 80s and bought a Black Sabbath songbook around the same time.
Geezer, Steve Harris and Geddy were my first influences... and you can probably throw in John Paul Jones too.
Amazing how Sabbath has stood up to the test of time.
