To me that would be a fit with urban gospel or the Black Church if you like. On the other hand you say that you will be getting lead sheets which reads as CCM, maybe a Nashville country pop style. Since relatively few urban gospel songs have been put in the lyric chord sheet format and posted to the open sites. Because basically it is rarely lead by an acoustic guitarist playing cowboy chords but by a keys player
When you do find urban gospel ion the internet it tends to be in the "chorded" format. Think of it as tabs for keyboard players who don't know how to contruct their extended chords. I find them almost as hard to read as trying to play sax with a fingering chart over a lyric.
You ear will be the ultimate guide as you pick up a chord progression and song structure.

I have talked to the drummer some more, and I guess they do different tunes every week, and no one knows what will be called until they get to the gig. I'e done a number of gigs with just lyrics and chords before, mostly hired to back singers. I am pretty solid on following them. I will make sure to bring my tonebone as I was told it will be DI to a board with a solid sound man running it, and I will have my 6er and my Double Bass with me, as the drummer requested. You guys are all awesome for helping me out! |

some sort of hand signals to band out, loop a chorus, pick it up and such |

| I'm all for thinking on your feet if needed, but why make life harder than it needs to be? Like I mentioned earlier, we have about 200 songs we draw on, and we usually play 6 different songs per week, but the BL sends an email by Tuesday of the setlist for the coming Sunday so we can all practice them. Granted I'm not doing any serious woodshedding, but I like to run through everything a time or 2, and clean up any trouble areas if there is a difficult part. Of course on occassion we'll show up and the pastor will ask us for a last minute change/addition, which we accomodate, but there's no reason to leave the whole setlist unplanned. |

Hopefully they have a run through the morning of which is better than nothing.

At my church the music is for keyboards and I am expected to fake it off the chords. The music does give you a considerable amount of rhythmic information though. Of course we get the music and practice "tapes" two weeks in advance so it is a lot different from the church you are working with.

Abe Laboriel is another great player who does plenty of gospel stuff. |

Luckily we do have a decent length rehearsal ahead of time. I guess the place has some IEM's already. But I'll make sure to bring some.
I am really getting excited. It'll be a new venture, and on top of the music (and pay) I get free soup and chili after the service! I can never turn down free food. |

That is just one genre and then only if that church is only playing originals and their songwriters were heavily influenced by U2. Even if they are playing the top 40 CCLI other stuff slipped through in the original performances.
