Just watched Randy Coven's new video "Nu School"-cool as **** of course. He just knows how to write bass compositions-Tapping, whammy bar bends, harmonics, lots of good bass techniques in there.

Back in the 80's I had couple of his cassette recordings ( Funk Me Tender and Sammy Says Ouch). They were regulars in the 'ol deck.

Randy was in berklee when i was up there in '78, and he was the reigning "jaco/fusion guy". it's great to see he's still solidly pushing the art forward. he's taken an innovative approach in the incorporation of Bach cello suite motifs into this multi-layered piece. if you don't know Randy, this video is a great introduction.

I still own the vinyl version of "Funk me Tender" and I am the proud owner of Randy's Fodera (the one on the original cover). I met Randy on one of Yngwie's tours and he seems to be a nice guy (as much as I judge one person in 15-20min)

I was at Berklee in '78, too, and in addition to Randy, the bass students included Victor Bailey, Tim Landers, Wayne Pedzwatr and Ed Friedland. A good time to be there!

and all the great teachers... bruce gertz, whit browne.. a hotbed of fine folks! interesting years..

Hey Doug, how are things?

Also there at the same time, and a huge influence on me was Wayne Pedzwatr. That guy could swing like a mofo on electric bass. He was really the guy that convinced me that straight ahead jazz could work on electric. Plus, he was the first guy I ever heard do a 16th note triplet slap lick. Wayne went on to become Buddy Rich's bassist for many years, and then a top NY session player. Sadly, he died young, but he made a big impression on me.

Kermit Driscoll was there too.

yes Ed, a big era (and specific year) that was.. like the Haight Ashbury of modern jazz/fusion bass! many talents and styles conjoined.
