Hey everyone,
I just had a blast watching the "Sweet Soul Music" Stax Records Revue live in Oslo Norway 1967. It was on WLIW here in NY last night, but I think it's also out on DVD. Sam and Dave, Otis Redding, Eddie Floyd and Arthur Conley backed up by Booker T. & the MG's and the Mar-Keys. Wow wow and wow. The vocal performances are smoking of course, but the best part is the fact that Duck is in pretty much every shot (he is set up stage center with Al Jackson stage left). Greasy looking stock P-Bass through a Marshall Stack (!) ... He's bringing it all night. Definitely check it out as a music fan, but as a bassplayer it is a real treat compared to other concert reels where you can't even see the low ender, much less get to check out his fingering and interactions with the drummer and singers. Highly recommended! |

I recently caught an episode of Live from the Montreaux Festival (on Ovation channel I believe) and it had various artists Like BB King, The Roots, and Booker T and the MGs (I believe it was taped in '05). The MGs only played 1 song (Green onions) but it was fun to see Duck and Steve Cropper. Duck was using a Blonde w/ Rosewood boarded Lakland thru an Ampeg setup and sounded great |

Wonderful to watch and listen to Cropper and Booker T., , but the FOH mix had almost no bass in it, and you couldn't approach the stage to hear that mix as they had a massive semi-circular boom set up in front for the cameras. It was still a treat to see one of my favorite bassists in action finally, but I was pretty pissed off at the inaudible bass. That and the fact that it was boiling hot in the room and you couldn't even take a plastic bottle of water inside, made it a mixed experience. I've kind of given up on the festival as the tickets are extremely expensive, and I've had a few other bad experiences there.
The Stax Revue DVD from Norway is a stunner, alright. |

They had a Leslie on each side of the stage, the sound of the B3 was simply magnificent, and Steve Cropper's tone live is something else entirely- every note is just dripping with tone and emotion, and he plays so few you really feel each one. Inspirational band, and a lesson on 'less is more'. They did all my favorites, too. It just kills me that the bass was so low, as I was standing next to the mixing board and heard the mix the soundman was hearing, and there was almost no bass in it. Incomprehensible, really, unless the mic on the Ampeg was a dummy... |
