Do you think Jason Newsted was an underrated bassist?

not underrated, he's got stage precense, he's got some skills, some awesome vocals, maybe underrated but because of the crap he had to go through from the other members but he is still a good bassist and musician overall

I'd say he's pretty highly regarded, discussed, and praised and he played with one of the most famous bands in rock. I have a hard time seeing how that could possibly translate to being "underrated."

I think he is well thought of based on what people have heard him do. That said, he wasn't allowed to do much in Metallica that was outside the box. Since he wasn't really a creative voice in Metallica, we probably don't really know just how good a bassist he is or isn't. But, his work with them is strong enough to get him some respect, which he is due. His lines on The God That Failed and My Friend of Misery, in particular, are really some nice work on his part.

I also give him props for sneaking things in, like the fretless on Until It Sleeps or the 12-string bass on Wherever I May Roam (only in the beginning, but that very first note before the sitar). I was watching Classic Albums on VH1 Classic and they were playing that song with Newsted and Hammett sitting behind the board and it seemed they were all surprised to hear that it was Jason playing that note on a 12-string bass and not some sample. Shows you how much attention those guys paid to the bassist!

Never could understand it but I always see alot of hate toward him. I thought he was good, not amazing but did his job and had a good stage presence.

Excellent player, and my favorite of all of Metallica's bassists. Granted, Trujillo has the best technique, and Burton had the great musical vision, but Newsted did what all the great metal bassists do - play for the song. Very underrated, IMO.

I like him better then Trujillo less then Burton but I don't think he's underrated. As I think about Metallica's bass players it hit me that the bass players in that band seem to be the only guys that live in reality? Newsted is good at what he does but I'm not sure that he has gotten less attention than derserved for his playing.

It's not so much that Jason is underrated IMO...but that Metallica in general is so overrated...Especially Kirk...To me, Kirk is the most overrated lead guitar player in rock...his lines are just horrible (again...IMO)...and Lars...ugh...

OK sorry for the derail...

Big big fan. He's the reason I picked up the bass the first time around.

Very versatile too, his playing with Echobrain, Voivod, and Ozzy was spot on what it should be, even working with the likes of Roy Rogers. He's a visionary as well, it just wasn't allowed to come out with Metallica.

newsted was underrated because nobody gave him credit for what he did for the band. especially the band didn't give a frack which is sad.
IMO jason is an excellent bass player. in metallica he was dedicated, hard working and he always gave 110% live.
but nobody really noticed.
that's why i think he is underrated.

+1,000

I play lead guitar as well as bass and when I was a whipper-snapper I learned a LOT of Metallica songs. I got very bored learning the soloes. Mostly Em pentatonic scales at 180BPM. And, don't forget..it isn't a solo if you aren't rocking the wah pedal. IMO, Kirk's leads are almost completely void of imagination, he is basically playing warm-up exercises really fast. He has done SOME good lead work (One and The Unforgiven are my favorites of his).

But, the really funny thing is how much I really like James H. as a lead guitarist. He doesn't play leads often, but they always seem to have more feel and melody to them. James doesn't have the chops of Kirk, but I would still rather listen to him solo than Kirk any day of the week.

Now, back to Newsted.....
