Nick Simper of Mk-1 Deep Purple

Here's a guy most of you wont know about; he played bass on the first 3 Deep Purple albums and would later form obscure 70s hard rock group Warhorse. Anyway, he had some good basslines and I wanna find out if anyone else enjoys his work?

I'm a HUGE Deep Purple fan & I think Nicky definitely has his place in the lore of the band. He's more of a classic '60s bassist if that makes sense, but I like his playing. I really like that third DP record simply titled "Deep Purple". It's the last one before Gillan & Glover joined. An oft overlooked classic...the bridge between their psychedelic stuff & their classic heavy material.

I think he joined Jo Jo Gunn in the early/mid 70's after their first bassist left.

It's almost a shame the Mk II Deep Purple was arguably even better than the original line up with Nick, and Rod Evans (vocals), as I loved that first band. Hush was a great hit for them and they produced lot's of awesome late 60s era rock for a while.
Nick got one of the rare plank bodied P basses that made it to UK shores in the late 60s.

Jimmy Randall was Mark Andes replacement in Jo Jo Gunne before they called it quits, and I've never heard of Nick being part of this band, nor do I find anything in a search.

Warhorse had potential but faded before they got it really going.

Thanx for the Simper mention!

I did security for ZZ Top when they played Brixton Academy a few years back, and I spent the entire evening standing next to Mr Simper. Really wanted to say hello but didn't have the guts. Wish I had now.

Nick Simper was one of my early influences--actually I remember when i first got on talkbass I posted an inquiry about Nick, but nobody really knew what happened outside of that deep-purple article.

If anyone remembers the song "Anthem", I was a big fan of that sound--i was really new to bass when I first heard that song and I didn't realize that Ian Paice was playing his kick drum in rhythm to Nick's bassline, and so to me, Nick had an attack like i had never heard before haha!
