The Nirvana rythm section that was Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl.

It's kinda funny how kids these days who were too young to have been there when "Nevermind" came out, know about Nirvana either through bands they like expressing their love for Nirvana or in some cases through their parents. But ask them about the individual members and Kurt Cobain is the only one they can name.

Even stronger, there are people who know of Nirvana and of Dave Grohl's succesive band the Foo Fighters but apparently had no clue whatsoever that Dave used to be in Nirvana. No Joke, I was watching the Classic albums special on "Nevermind" with my 19 year old cousin and she went: "Isn't that Dave from the Foo Fighters, why is he in this special about Nirvana?"

Anyway, one thing that has to be said about Novoselic and Grohl is that they provided Cobain's angst riden songs with a rock solid foundation consisting of Novoselic's McCartney influenced melodic playing and Grohl's Bonham-esq drumming and I figured it to be fun to start a thread in which we can showcase just that.

To start it off, here's a bit from "Classic albums" where Butch Vig breaks down the recording process of "In Bloom" he also expresses how solid the groove between Krist and Dave was. And the men themselves explain what their roles as Bass player and drummer were.

Ummm, Nevermind came out about two months before I was even born and I definately know who Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl are. Krist was a huge influence on me when I first started playing. The first song I learned how to play that actually had different parts in it was In Bloom and it was also the first song that I played with a group.

Same people who forget that Peter Gabriel was a lead singer and Phil was a drummer. lol. Alas, Nirvana had a great rythym section, highlighted by their unplugged performance.

Wow. I have to wonder why you even bothered. I watched all the clips and thought they were pretty cool, but then I liked Nirvana.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
In Utero is a much better album, and Krist, Kurt, and Dave all played much better on In Utero than they did on Nevermind. Search your heart. You know this to be true.

As little as I care for Nirvana nowadays, Nevermind was the album I started on. Drain You was my go to song.

Strangely enough, I like Bleach better than anything else they've put out.

Yeah, I play a little bass too. I could tell what you were doing there. You were playing some major and minor scales. I was watching your hands.

Careful! You're showing your age now.

Yeah this is something we all have to get used to as we "grow up". I had a conversation one time with a "kid" I worked with and when he said "I like the old Metallica, you know like the Black album" my response was "Ok I'm done talking to you" ha ha! The first time I saw Metallica was on tour for Master of Puppets with Cliff as an opening act for Ozzy Osbournes Ultimate Sin album. (Yes my walker is on order complete with tennis balls and oxygen tank)

The flip side of that is when I was 24 I was dating a girl that was 35. When I met her sister she said "Where were you on prom night?" I laughed and said "2nd grade." She looked shocked as hell. Apparently she hadn't done the math.

It just goes to show, it's all a matter of perspective.

I have the utmost respect for Dave. I'm not a huge fan of the thier music, but they have a song here and there that I like. Kurt got famous and then started spouting about how he didn't want to be famous. Others have sold out. Dave does what he wants and if others like it, great. If not, that's fine too. That's how it should be.

I love Grohl on drums, he has that same kind of wild energy as Bonham or Moon had. I always found it strange that Novoselic never got into another succesful band, wonder if it was because he couldn't or because he didn't want to.

No comments on how Novoselic looks like an insurance claims adjuster now? Did you see him in some of those You Tube clips? Funny.

Not that I should talk. I'm a pretty square looking white collar dude too!

Just thought it was funny to see him like that compared to how I picture him with his bass landing on his head after he threw it in the air on that MTV show.
