Many bass players would play a simple, repetitive 8th notes on DP songs, but not Roger. For example, Roger's bass is all over the place on songs like Highway Star, Pictures of Home, to name a few. Moreover, his Ric tone is to die for. Although I consider Glenn Hughes the voice of rock, DP went downhill in the bass department in Mk III.

| | the other white meat | | | | | +1 A perfect example of a member integral to a band... Roger is and was a fantastic player and a favorite of mine! He and Chris Squire were the culprits behind my ordering a brand new 4000 back in the day (I couldn't afford the 4001!). But- it was black and it was BAD!! Glenn Hughes was a phenomenal singer with Trapeze. Very interesting when it came out! |

Glover, Bruce, Gary Thain, Glenn Cornick, etc. are obvious examples.
Things began to get a bit watered-down with the anti-technique Punk movement.
I guess "jamming" was viewed as too self-indulgent. Quote: |

| Agree...his Ric tone is iconic. The clips of him playing a sunburst P-bass are pretty happenin', too. Deep Purple - Highway Star - YouTube

Back in the day, DP was one of my bands...I still remember getting that issue of Circus (what any wannbe-Rock star read back then)...
...and seeing "Deep Purple Shake-Up: Gillan & Glover OUT"
I was shocked...& a little pissed, too.

Yeah, it must have been the hat comment.

I liked his tone on Machine Head so much that I butchered my first 4001 Ric by adding J Bass pickups to it. Just couldn't understand why it didn't quite sound the same and there was this weird phasing thing going on hmmm..... lol back then it could've been a number of things

But Hughes is no slouch on the bass....

His Rick sound, however, never did it for me and I don't think Purple went downhill basswise when Hughes joined.
His Pre sound in the California Jam video or the Live In London recordings is just great IMO..
I like how Glover says he doesn't consider himself a clever or brilliant bass player in the Machine Head DVD. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
