No Love for Roger Glover?

On many DP Mk II songs Roger's bass line is a driving force. Many bass players would play a simple, repetitive 8th notes on DP songs, but not Roger. For example, Roger's bass is all over the place on songs like Highway Star, Pictures of Home, to name a few. Moreover, his Ric tone is to die for. Although I consider Glenn Hughes the voice of rock, DP went downhill in the bass department in Mk III.

A perfect example of a member integral to a band... Roger is and was a fantastic player and a favorite of mine! He and Chris Squire were the culprits behind my ordering a brand new 4000 back in the day (I couldn't afford the 4001!). But- it was black and it was BAD!! Glenn Hughes was a phenomenal singer with Trapeze. Very interesting when it came out!

There's a transcription with tabs of Highway Star in the Jan issue of BP magazine. Enjoy.

That's what was expected at that time...you were part of the band...but you were expected to "jam" & be interactive (especially during long solos).
Glover, Bruce, Gary Thain, Glenn Cornick, etc. are obvious examples.
Things began to get a bit watered-down with the anti-technique Punk movement.
I guess "jamming" was viewed as too self-indulgent.

Agree...his Ric tone is iconic. The clips of him playing a sunburst P-bass are pretty happenin', too.

Just watched the video. I've seen Blackmore's pilgrim hat before, and it has to be THE worst hat of R&R ever. Didn't anyone have the guts to tell him back then?? Maybe Ian Gillan did, and that's what forced their breakup.

Could be.
Back in the day, DP was one of my bands...I still remember getting that issue of Circus (what any wannbe-Rock star read back then)...

...and seeing "Deep Purple Shake-Up: Gillan & Glover OUT"

I was shocked...& a little pissed, too.

I saw an interview with Blackmore, and it seemed he had some issue with Gillan, but wouldn't discus it. His only reply was 'He (Gillan) knows why....'

Yeah, it must have been the hat comment.

Glover has always been one of my favorite bassists and Blackmore one of my favorite guitarists. I have the Deep Purple CD box set 1968 - 1998 and it covers all the lineups during that period but Glover and Blackmore had the magic together. Both melodic yet powerful rhythmic players.

Glover drove the DP train IMHO. Can't imagine any of that music without him.

Greetings from the North,

I liked his tone on Machine Head so much that I butchered my first 4001 Ric by adding J Bass pickups to it. Just couldn't understand why it didn't quite sound the same and there was this weird phasing thing going on hmmm..... lol back then it could've been a number of things

Roger is one of the main reasons that I'm primarily a Rickenbacker player to this day. Great tone, great player, great producer. Love that guy.

But Hughes is no slouch on the bass....

Never experienced Deep Purple in their heyday...I'm a different generation, but I've always liked Glover's playing a lot.
His Rick sound, however, never did it for me and I don't think Purple went downhill basswise when Hughes joined.
His Pre sound in the California Jam video or the Live In London recordings is just great IMO..

I like how Glover says he doesn't consider himself a clever or brilliant bass player in the Machine Head DVD.
