I've heard of something that does that, I think its called Dragonfly or something. From what I've seen its basically a stethoscope with suction cups

If all you're worried about is 60 cycle noise from line power, a small portable battery powered unit might fit the bill. I bought the Earwig. Works great. If you get one and plan to throw it in a gig bag or overnight bag, I suggest changing the power/volume knob to a round knob so that it doesn't accidently get turned on during transport.

there's small 'pocket amplifiers,' that are basically an amp's electronics minus the speaker. they run on batteries usually. can't tell u much about them, but some people have DIY'd ones out of altoid containers

as far as 'non-electronic goes,' there's the dragonfly, but of course that doesn't have any volume or tone options. its not possible to power a set of phones with the electrical signal produced by the instrument, there needs to be something that amplifies the signal (hence the 9V in those pocket amps)
