Unhappy noob here, mark hoppus?

Sign in to disble this ad
hey, anybody know mark hoppus? from blink182?
1
well, I just would like to ask though, or years i have been trying to perfect, and copy, well not really copy, I just want to get that trebly / bassy sound that I usually hear from mr. hoppus, well i got an equalizer though, I do not have my own bass amp, but im using a fender jazz bass, im not really sure what model it was, but im sure it still had its custom fender pick-ups(but they're rusty though) but i just cant get the sound right.

2
-I heard somebody playing bass with a zoom, it looked like it had a lot of effects though, do you guys use digital effects?

3
what are the factors that affect the sound of the bass. I know the knobs on the amp but im not really sure on how to set them up. I also have an equalizer(boston) but i still cant get it right. im using cheap strings though.

4
any suggestions guys?
how can I hear sound clips from you guys?
is there any way i could hear'em? :

umm... sorry to be a doucher, but... get an amp? are you failing to get your desired tone sans-amp (PUNNN!N!N!N!!!11!!!).

i dont like zoom. i had that zoom 707 or #0#, whatever it was, and i will hate them until they cease to be. that said, some like their newer ones.

lots of things affect the sound of the bass. bass preamp... amp preamp... effects... attack...

i bet hoppus uses a pick or something and guts the lows, but you couldnt afford to make me listen to blink 182.

oh, and yes, people here use digital effects. there are lots of them.

So...you're not playing through an amplifier at all? Why the hell would you need an effect then?

First off, Hoppus doesn't really use effects. Use the search function and you'll see his normal setup Fender P-bass, bright roundwound strings, with the tone knob on the bass all the way up. Typically into an Ampeg SVT amp.

Please, go read the basics before you embarrass yourself again.

For that trebly sound, throw on a new set of round wound strings like EB's or DR Highbeams (my favorite), set your treble up on your amp and play with a pick. My three main basses, G&L L-2000, Fender Geddy Lee sig, and Fender Mark Hoppus sig, can all get this sound pretty well.
Hitting the pick more towards the neck pickup will help also.

try your settings on yoiur amp with the bass and treble 3/4ths up, and mid 1/2. But go get new strings first.

im not suggesting you hit up the amp forum (i dont think?) but mids/treble/whatever is just cutting or boosting a particular frequency.

Experience man! Go out and try everything you are wondering about. Turn knobs and press pedals. Find the sound you like.

oh, and hit up a local shop and play with as much stuff as you can. you can hear people shred and wank around in a music store. dont be discouraged. who cares? youre obviously new to tone (if not bass... just guessing), so just go for it man. dont ever be afraid to play, ever.

First get a small practice amp, buy Ernie Ball Slinkys, a P bass with Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders and scoop the mids.

Mark Hoppus = Fender Precision Bass through Ampeg SVT toob amplifer.

thats pretty much the standard for alot of bands, in alot of generes.

Your best bet would be
1. get a decent-is amp (the best you can afford)
2. if its not an Ampeg SVT, then get a Tech21 VTbass effects pedal which can sound like one.

boosting midrange will make your bass sound harsher, but will help it stand out in a dense band mix, lowering the midrange will make your bass sound smoother.

New strings are essential. I always forget how nice my basses sound until i get new strings.

alright!, mi going to get myself an amp, I live in the phils. though, Im in a band, but i am curently recovering from financial defeciencies because I jsut bought a 2nd hand fender jazz bass.

and about the equalizer i bought though, it seems that im not getting the right stuff from it, or is it just that i mix all the knobs ups.

compared to the distortion footswitch, how is it compared to the equializer that i got?
is it going to give me that distorted sound the guitar has?

- yep! experince, i get it. dont worry, i'll experiment when i get my amp.
thank you all for the suggestions!!! I appreciate it.
the music scene here sucks. big time, in the philippines though, heheehe.

In my opinion, I've never understood why people want to copy other people's sound exactly to perfection.

Just buy what you want to, play how you want to, sound how you want to and you will be fine.

But that's just me.
