nice try though...

| | Son, I am disappoint. | | Join Date: Sep 2006 Location: Gig Harbor, Washington | | | There was a thread about his tone a while ago.
He used to use Ampeg SVT's with some kind of distortion (I will get to that in a sec) with a P-bass (EMG pickups).
I have read that he likes his strings to wear in over a couple of shows as he doesnt like the bright clacky sounds and prefers to have his cab miked.
Recently he has been using Fender PRO810's, a First Act Delgada bass, and what looks like a Orange Thunderverb 200 or AD200B.
The distortion is said to be a ProCo Juggernaut which is the bass version of the Rat.
But if you want his tone then I suggest using a P-bass, getting a heavy distortion, let your strings mellow a bit, and play the crap out of the thing. I also like his tone as well, big, ugly, and it cuts very well.

even if i retract my previous statement..
theres bass in chugga chugga hardcore? unless its that typical "sick of it all" overdriven bass run that they throw in right before the breakdown, then i never hear bass

Which 16 year old kid are you? I'll make some ignorant assumptions, since that seems to be your favorite thing... I'm going to just go ahead and assume by your bands music that you know absolutely NOTHING about, hardcore, death metal or any other genre of underground music. I'm also guessing you've never turned off your radio and tried searching for music outside of the mainstream... Man, being ignorant is fun.

I saw them live at the engine room in Houston, Texas and Ryan Clark can go between screaming and singing fairly quick and fluidly...which is commendable in my opinion.

I use a Peavey 700 Tour through a Hartke 810, would the fact i don't use a tube head have any real effect? i was thinking about a Sansamp aswell, can't make up my mind between an RBI or an RPM :S |

now, mind you, i don't own a tube amp. but i do know and appreciate the difference between tube and solid state.
as for a pedal, perhaps the EHX English Muff'n, or the Tech21 VTBass would be good places to start...

Man, being ignorant is fun. | so much hate for someone misinformed. and taking a shot at a page that the other members of my band put up 3 years ago and havent updated in at least 2 years... wow. i took the liberty of changing the link to the CORRECT band page.
im actually 19 (though almost 16 when that was made). i refuse to listen to the radio unless im in my car, and thats because i got it last week, its from 1985, and i havent had time to rig a cd player into it.
ive heard norma jean, and it was the same old BS noise that everyone else was doing. sucks that you cant take a joke, but since you personally attacked me, i have to say something. i dont write most of the tunes in my band, and i know plenty about hardcore. real hardcore. before it was girl pants and eyeliner. i dont bring teh cr00sh m0sh, i just sit at home and listen to bands like gorilla biscuits and xlooking forwardx.
i am negative towards all modern metal. metal DIED with cliff burton. all we have now that is worth a $*** is old school thrash bands like municipal waste. think i heard them on the radio? nope. douche.
the only death metal band worth mentioning is Death, and thats because the guitar work was decent. everything else sounded terrible IMO.
you really need to find something better to do with your time. "oh no.. someone told a joke about a trite music genre, i have to take it personally."

"oh no.. someone told a joke about a trite music genre, i have to take it personally." | In all fairness, you brought the flaming on yourself. Doesn't justify it, but coming into a thread about Norman Jean and calling them the stuff you did isn't exactly going to win you praise.
I personally like them from time to time, but I'll quit with the derail.

but to actually contribute to the thread;
as stated, tube heads can help give you a dirty gritty sound
though not all
as for pedals, i have a tech 21 sansamp Bass XXL which is extremely dirty and raunchy
has a lot of crunch and power, and you dont loose volume or bass or anything like that
it does create a lot of feedback however, something to be careful with
as for basses, again as stated, p basses are nice for dirty ballsy tones
though there are tons of other basses with crunch and meat out there
another pedal i can suggest is the EHX bass big muff, thats some good stuff
or, if you want a switcheable overdrive/fuzz get the EHX bass blogger
i have all three of the pedals i mentioned and they all sound great
hope this helps

Just being as ignorant as you where dude. Not taking anything personally, but you can keep pretending that I am. Thanks for the douche comment though. I'm hurt, really...
You said it yourself that you think modern hardcore, "nu_hardcore", whatever you feel like calling it, and death metal are the same, which is a completely ignorant statement... So I just felt some ignorance needed to be thrown at you, that's all. You obviously came into this thread looking for it...
But all this over a band I haven't even cared about since 2 or 3 CD's ago... Sorry to the OP and everyone else for stirring things up and sort of derailing the thread.
