Notable bassists using late 50s P-basses

Playing my Nash P-Bass today when I was thinking. I can't think of any famous bass players that use P-basses from the late 50s (57-59) with the gold guard and everything. I read that Tony Levin used to use one for recording.

Anyone else?

Not sure he would qualify as "famous" any longer, but I recall Bruce Hall of REO Speedwagon used to play either a 58 or 59 P bass in the early 1980's, when Hi Infidelity was all over the radio.

Any pics of him with the 50s P-Bass?

IIRC didn't the guy from Canned Heat play one with a black finish?

This thread is worthless without pics.

I think Mike Dirnt of Green Day uses a late 50's style P; seeing as it has a single-coil's pickgaurd style w/ a split coil, I'm betting it isn't vintage, though it might just be a custom job.

Touche.

I'm looking for those maple necked monsters, or were they just not popular?

Good call on the Duck Dunn

Sting's main single coil P is a '57. One of the last before they changed them.

I've only seen one picture of Duck playing the P with J neck. His signature Lakland is a Bob Glaub with a DJ neck. But most of his work and photos are the maple neck, andodized guard, 'bust P. There's at least one early photo of The MGs showing him holding a SCP also.

The bassist from Rise Against Joe Principe uses a reissue of a late 50's P in white. He also play's a J bass not sure of the year or model on the J. I think the P has a Duncan QP in but could be wrong.

Lyle Ritz used two. A '58 with flats and a '59 with rounds. Heard on hundreds of hit records and tv shows, many of which Carol Kaye inaccurately remembers playing.
