4. I started guitar lessons at age 11. My guitar was a 6 string Magnatone electric. The guitar was stolen 9 years later. I played 6 string acoustics off and on for the next 40+ years. I owned 2 cheapo pawn shop acoustics in that period.
Three years ago I started playing 6 string acoustic electrics on a regular basis in a nursing home ministry.
February of 2009, I was challenged to take up the bass guitar by our worship leader. After buying and selling many bass guitars to find my 'fit', I decided on the three above with a Peavey Dyna bass in route.
I like playing the bass more than the guitar!

4. History:
Started playing bass in High School.
Quit when I went to college. Sold my Fender MusicMaster bass, my Gibson EB-0, and my Kay POS. Sold some guitar gear that is worth a lot now too. And a nice Gibson EB-2 slipped right through my fingers.
Decided I wanted a bass again in the mid 80's. Spent the money, played it a little. Very little.
Started playing at church in '91. Upgraded basses a lot. Guild JSB-2, Aria SB-1000, Gibson EB-2, and a bunch more I don't recall or don't want to admit. All of the good stuff was sold or traded to get to what I have now... which is pretty good I suppose. I try to play them all on at least one gig a year. The G&L is the main Cover Band bass, and the ToneSmith is the main Church bass.
Somewhere in '92 or '93 started playing in a friend's work band. The company had everything except a bass player. Decent group of software nerds, we had plenty of fun playing company parties and other events. Eventually no one was working for that company any more. Also played with a group of college kids, but I found it difficult to be the "parent" role.
All this gave way to the current bands, plus still playing in church on a regular rotation.

Looks like I'm Old Fart #3.

Started playing DB when I was 9, began playing paying jazz gigs at 12, studied classically, full-time bassist until the mid-'90's when I finally got a day job. Still gigging, did 152 dates in 2009, trying to work much less this year (mostly jazz and classic rock)

Might as well plunk the DB in here, too ....

4.) Rented my first bass and amplifier, (Decca Bass and Supro 1x12 open back tube amplifier with 35 watts), the day after the Beatles were on Ed Sullivan back in the days of B/W television, played my first gig three weeks later and never looked back. Too many midwest bands to remember followed with a year and a half with the Grassroots as tour bassist in the early 80's. Currently doing a festival, showcase tour with IX Lives around Wisconsin. Still own, and have retired to nostalgia and studio only work, the first bass I bought with gig money. I also love the fact that I am the OF in the current band, a cancer survivor of six years now, and can still rock an opening set of an hour and twenty minutes of non-stop classic rock tunes. And now TB has a place for all of the OF bass players in America. OFBPOAC member No. 6

Started bass in 1970 after running a light show for a local band and the bass player didn't show up for the gig... they pointed their fingers at me and I played my first night as a bassist transferring my interval knowledge on trumpet to bass... lots of mistakes, but they hired me after that night! Spent the next 40 years traveling and performing USA, and one Asia tour. Highlights: playing a gig with SRV, trading dirty jokes with Red Skelton, winning a battle of the bands against Kansas (then, White Clover) based on a technicality (questionable language on their part!), getting wasted with James Garner, Leon Russell, and Michael Parks at the same party, hanging out with Duck Dunn (producer) eating Memphis Bar-B-Que, playing his '58 P, and listening to stories by him and his buddy Brian Johnson (AC/DC) tell about Keith Richards encounters (surreal)...

nowadays:
Sex, Drugs, and Rock'n'Roll
is quickly becoming replaced by
Viagra, Nitro, and Rockin' Chair

I'm in at 52.

Gear: Nordy vJ4, Mesa amplification... I started playing guitar at age 8, picked up the bass in high school and never looked back. Played in ska and punk bands in the 70s/early 80s. School, career, kids, etc... now playing in a reggae band and a roots rock band playing about 3 nights a week.

Born in 1956, both my bass and myself. Yeah, to be in this club as a proper member, you gotta have an old Precision.

I played semi-pro for a couple years, it was really a crappy job at that level. As I described it:

"Get no sleep. Load two tons of heavy black boxes into the truck. Drive 150 miles, unload all the little black boxes up the stairs and into a place that smells like cigarette smoke and beer. Wire up all the boxes together and jump around in the middle of them for several hours until well after midnight. Then, load all the black boxes back into the truck, drive back 150 miles, get no sleep. Repeat until you can't stand it anymore.

I just jam and home-record nowdays.
