Well as far as underappreciated bassist would go.. id say..-

Bob Thompson(not sure thats his last name) from BIG DRILL CAR... complete jazzy basslines in punk music.

Karl Alverez, Tony Lombardo- Descendents/ALL

Everybody knows Karl is good, hes alot like bob, but GOD.. TONY ROCKED.. listen to Myage by Descendents.. Thats a tasty bassline right there.

I saw this one cat who played bass for Bruce Hornspy. Never seen or heard of him, never caught his name on this show, but i saw him on a Direct TV freeview and this cat was tearing it up. Ive never heard some bass like that in my life. Complete Coolidge!

Also, all the bassist who play rootnote, nobody can say that suck, just because they play rootnote, some music just sounds better with rootnote. Who knows, as my friend Randy pointed out, you never know musical talent until you hear them use it to there extent. Thats why i hate it when people rag on hoppus or something, i mean sure hes not jaco, but who care?? I dont personally like him, but who knows he might just be an alright player. At least hes doing something he loves.

You're right, Granpa Curly, Tony did rock.

In addtion:

Anna Meyers-Smith:Pilfers
Rick Osmonte-Spring Heeled Jack
Mya-The Chinkees

And I think Hub from the Roots doesn't nearly get enough credit, he is just amazing.

Moreso than that Jaco guy, I think.

Just kidding.

Ben Sheppard from Soundgarden. Sure they were a popular band and all, but more for Kim Thayill's guitar work and Cornell's voice. There's some really good lines in their songs.

Hellmut Hattler of Kraan and Tab Two fame.

Before you put down pick players, listen to this guy.
He plays like that since the early 70s btw.

Barry Adamson, of Magazine.

It's mad, they're ace, post-punk before Joy Division, yet the only person I know who's heard of them (apart from me) is someone who was there at the time.

Magazine are a totally underrated band too.

a great bassist.
also I think he used a chorused sound before Peter Hook. (Joy Division and Magazine sharing a common producer in Martin Hannett)
Billy Gould of Faith no more mentioned him as an influence.

I'll add Derek Forbes with early Simple Minds, whose material wasn't a million miles away from Magazine's at one point.

and Tim Butler with the Psychedelic Furs.

Bryan Beller, best know for his work with Mike Keneally (although he's also worked with Steve Vai, Wayne Kramer, James LaBrie of Dream Theater and a host of L.A. singer-songwriters). One of those rare "chops to spare with the knowledge of when to use them" bassists in the vein of Tony Levin.
