Okay, Who LOOKS The Coolest?

Okay, just for fun...

Time to fess up. Even if you're not into stage presence, there are certain people who command attention. We've all, at some time, copied a mannerism or two from our hero's when were were little fledglings playing air bass in front of the mirror in our bedroom. But who's style wound up sticking with you?

Some guys are tremendous showmen. Other's show poise. Some are so emotional it's distracting. Some are just interested in getting the job done but are a little dull to watch. Some guys have the quintessential "bass player" vibe.

I'm the kind of guy who would never be happy as the "guy in the back" nor am I the type to run around or make exaggerated gestures. I go for cool.

My fav choices for cool looking bassists are Sting, McCartney and Tony Kanal. They exude the understated " I'm a badass" persona in their own way.

So...who do you like? And what kind of presence do you try to project?

Nikki Sixx I think is pretty badass, as is Steve Benton. I also really like the way Visual Kei artists present themselves.

Not when I last saw him. He had to get into the wide-spread legs rock star stance a little bit at a time.

But I DO sympathize; I have arthritis in my hips. Ouch.

Got to see Jaco w Weather Report. He exuded cool.

Hmmmm... Sam Zurick of Owls... he stands completely motionless for minutes on end... And then, when he does move, even the slightest, you are magnetized to it.

Remember Mario Cipollina? He played bass for Huey Lewis and the News in their heyday. His appearance reminded me of Bowser from Sha Na Na, but his demeanor was the classic definition of cool.

I saw Scott Thunes playing with Zappa Plays Zappa late last year and he was very cool on stage. That man has attitude!

Marcus Miller has great attitude live too, but for me, there is only one:

Steve Harris.

Ben Shepard from Soundgarden/Hater/Mark Lanegan's band has a pretty amazing vibe live. Kinda Punk Rock meets 70's rocker When I saw him play in 92' he was playing his bass so low it literally was touching the stage, yet he was just ripping like it was strung around his neck like the fusion guys. Pretty bitchin'. He ALWAYS plays some beautiful old Fender as well.

Just look at passinwind's avatar and tell me that he is not the epitome of cool. It will be at that point when I call you a blind liar.

to answer this seriously, i always thought the coolest looking bassist i ever saw was peter steele.

the dude was a giant, and on a 4-5 foot high stage he was like a sky scraper.
