I was disappointed. The bass player wasn't upside down.

No kidding.
A left-handed bass strung so a righty can play it.

Glenn Cornick, anyone?

Nope.

Thick string is on the top, thin string is on the bottom.

The only thing "upside-down" in this video is the bass. It's a Lefty, turned over and re-strung for a righty. Jimmy Haslip, on the other hand DOES play "upside-down", in that the thick string is on the bottom, thin is on the top...and he plays a "lefty" bass...so in effect, he's the exact opposite of what's going on here...

Keith Horne plays it like Haslip...very wierd watching him play, especially on the slap/pop stuff.
In the month's Bass Player, there's a brief transcription of the Yellowjackets' "Imperial Strut". BP gives of warning(Haslip's bass is strung upsidedown) to thoe that watch this tune on the Yellowjacket's new Twenty Five DVD.

Has anyone ever played with a guitarist that plays his guitar strung upside down(a lefty that reverses a righthanded guitar)?
It will test you if you're trying to cheat by watching his hands.

The guy that plays guitar in Roger Waters' "In The Flesh" DVDplays like that. A righty guitar strung normally but played upside down by a leftie!

I just saw Jimmy Haslip and the Yellowjackets a week ago and he indeed played his bass upside down...and about as well as I have ever seen a bass played in the last 36 years since I began playing professionally...He was totally one with his bass for two sets -2 hours each-and virtually never opened his eyes to see where he was on the 6-string in spite of playing up and down the neck all night long as fast as 64th -128th notes( I'm not kidding)...He's definately one of the best bassists out there right now...if you have'nt seen him-get the Yellowjackets "Twenty Five" double DVD-CD...and you can see him for your self, but be prepared "to go to the woodshed"...Peace...DAcat

What a strange video. Their energy doesn't match the song. It looks like they're about to fall asleep (except for the drummer). Strange.

Hey Joe-I got a chance to talk to Jimmy before and after the gig and what a nice and humble person...extemely bright, very calm and not rushed at all... and very willing to talk...I actually stopped the conversation because I thought he needed to get ready to play...after wards I thought of about a hundred questions that I wish I'd asked him! We were sitting just 8 feet away from him ( and only 2 feet from the Yellow jackets drummer who is also a Monster)...Peace...DAcat

I never saw him live but I've heard similar stories about Jimmy as a person. It must be very inspiring to meet a man/bassist like Mr. Haslip. Tell me, did it make you want to go home and practice? (after the show of course).

I was thrilled to see him in BP this month. I bet there are a ton of bassists out there that don't know Jimmy Haslip. Sad. At least a lot of Les Claypool fans now have a vague idea who he might be. (Les is on the cover this month.)

25 is a great CD/DVD. There are several live performances on the DVD, it's great! Absolutely worth picking up! They throw the DVD in for FREE.

Hey Joe-funny you should ask...I've been so inspired by Jimmy (one of the nicest guys you could meet)and that concert... that I've been playing stuff I never thought I could before,my speed on jazz licks, and my ability to make up jams on the fly has really jumped to a whole new level as I've just decided "to go for it"...I"ve been watching lots of Jaco clips as well and, man...I've never been in this zone before where I'm making such rapid progress in my bass practice. You're also dead on about the Yellowjackets DVD-CD "Twenty Five"...there are about 9 live performances on the DVD(all long ones),and I think,8 on the CD -25 years of getting tight and right is what the Yellowjackets are all about...if you want to know how to be a band or to be inspired or to just see one of the best live recordings around...see this one...peace...DAcat
