Smile One of my all time bass heros responded to me !

Sign in to disble this ad
Yesterday I submitted this over on the Army Of Anyone boards for Robert Deleo and he responded ! This is the first contact I have ever had with any of bass heros, this really made my day.

Dear Robert

As I sit to write this to you I am filled with excitment that one of my greatest bass heros and inspirations of all time could very well read this and respond to it! First I would like to say that your outstanding performance on MTV Unplugged inspired me to pick up bass and made me forever a fan of the Violin bass. I was actually able to buy one of those Orlando Violin basses a few years back On ebay which I just sold this year to fund a completely custom violin bass based on our Orlando violin Basses by a lutheir in Santa Rosa CA named Michael Dolan.Where did you buy your Orlando ? Have you bought any new basses or had Schecter build you anything lately getting ready to tour ? After I have the custom violin bass built I am going to get him to build me a copy of your Model T in Greenburst with a Ash/Maple combo. By the way Adhesive is my favorite STP song that you have written but I got you ,Wonderful and Still Remains arent to far behind it. Robert when enough healing and time have gone by I hope you and your Bros in STP can reconnected and share with the world the beautiful chemistry you had as a band, I really long for that day that I could get excited about getting to the record store to buy the New STP record the day it comes out. With much Love and Respect, Kevin.

HEY KEVIN,

THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE LETTER. LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT THAT ORLANDO BASS. RIGHT BEFORE STP GOT SIGNED I WORKED AT A GUITAR SHOP ON SUNSET BLVD THAT WAS GOING OUT OF BUSINESS. THE JAPANESE OWNER HAD A BUNCH OF REALLY QUIRKY SIXTIES AND SEVENTIES STYLE GUITARS AND BASSES THAT I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN ATTRACTED TO. I SAW THAT ORLANDO AND HE GAVE IT ME FOR A HUNDRED DOLLARS. IT WAS PROBABLY THE BEST HUNDRED DOLLARS I EVER SPENT ON AN INSTRUMENT.THAT BASS WAS NOT ONLY USED FOR THE UNPLUGGED BUT WENT ON TO BE USED ON ALOT OF STP SONGS. BIG EMPTY, ATLANTA, HELLO IT'S LATE(one of my favorites) BI POLAR BEAR(outro only) AND A SONG FOR SLEEPING. MAN IT'S BEEN GOOD TO ME. I AM CURRENTLY HAVING SCHECTER BUILD ME AN EIGHT STRING BASS IN MY MODEL. I USED THAT ON A SONG OF RICHARD'S CALLED FATHER FIGURE. IT SOUNDS MASSIVE. I THINK YOU'LL REALLY DIG THE BASS WORK ON THIS RECORD.

ROBERT

That's awesome.

Even though I only think he wrote back because you sounded like a stalker in your letter, and he was afraid that ignoring you would escalate the problem.

That's damn cool.

Deleo is definitely one of my favorites. Core could easily be on the top 10 or 20 of best 90's albums. Wicked Garden, Plush and Sex Type Thing.

man, that is cool. i'm happy for you dude. i've had two similar experiences, and the feeling you get from something like that is really special. i sent a couple of emails to two of my all-time favorites. JJ Burnel of the Stranglers, and Blacky from Voivod, and they both replied. they were very, very cool. each in their own way. and both were very grateful for my appreciation. i think that bassists in general are especially receptive to their fans. maybe it's the role we play in life that makes us more complimentary.

That's awesome Kevin. Something you can carry with you for the rest of your life. It is always very exciting when you can have an exchange with an idol, brief as it may be.

You know it. I got to go backstage at Rush on the Test for Echo tour and got to spend a few minutes talking to Geddy.

Way cool Kevin.

Myspace makes it really easy to get in touch with your favorite musicians. It's incredible. The most inspring email i got was from Ben Kenney.

That is so cool!

It's awesome when you can communicate with a bass hero and find he's a real person. It kind of puts things in perspective.

That's pretty cool.

Do you find the more talented players also happen to be more down to earth and are approachable?

I find that with Marcus Miller. On his web site he has a message board and he seems to answer every post that pertains to him. Even if it's just a fan saying how he enjoyed his last show.

It's just good to know there are some genuine people out there.

Glad you had a great experience.

Congratulations Kevin. It's always cool to get the chance to talk with your favorite players. I also got a chance to meet Geddy Lee after crashing a sound check and was a bit let down with how he came across (as well as Neil) but was totaly blown away by how easy going Alex was. I proably spent 5-10 minutes gabbing with him and he also gave me some picks.
I had a chance to meet Chris Squire by jumping in his limo with him. My wife said he looked startled (I don't blame him) but he seemed pleasant. Again another member of my hero's band was even better. Rick Wakeman spent an hour plus after a show talking with fans. And it was the second time I've seen him do it. His attitude matched his musicianship.
Billy Sheehan seemed like he owned the world but Paul Gilbert and the others from Mr. Big were very cool.
Jeff Berlin I met after a small club show and he like a down to earth guy too.
Wow, looking back I've met some darn fine musicians along the way. I wish I had the photographs to go with the autographs I got.
