This came from a thread on another forum about songs, and it got me thinking. First, you need to understand that for me, a "song" is NOT the same as a particular recording, arrangement, performance, delivery, etc. So, for example the song "Badge" is a song by Eric Clapton and George Harrison, not the recording on "Goodbye"...
Anyway, I've heard several different approaches to Jack's lines on "Badge" and "White Room" from Nathan East's long tenure as Clapton's bassist. And there's Jack's own reinterpretations from various recordings (both with Cream at different times and his solo work). It got me curious about other long-time Clapton bassists. I wonder if there are any recordings of Carl Radle, Duck Dunn, or maybe Rick Gresch playing those two songs. Heck, I'd love to hear how Willie Weeks approaches "White Room"!
Anyone got some leads?
Thanks!
John

I'd like to know if there are recordings of his music by anybody.
I don't know this as a fact, just my suspicion.

Plus Jack re-recorded "White Room" (and "Sunshine Of Your Love") on one of his solo albums, as well as releasing recordings of "White Room" in various compilations of live solo recordings. But there aren't that many live recordings I know of floating around of earlier Clapton bands, so I was curious about how Carl or Duck would have approached those and similar lines...

| | | | I once heard Jack Bruce in an interview say how he almost never plays a song the same way twice. He admitted that, in concerts with Cream, he would get lazy and just play scales or make up something easy. I've listened to about 6 different recordings of "Deserted Citys of the Heart", and he's right, no two are the same! |

Didn't Felix Papallardi play bass on Badge?
Jack played piano? |

Jack played piano? | You're thinking of "What A Bringdown". Felix on bass, Jack on organ. It's one of my favorite songs on Good-bye.

I think Jack would be the first one to say that one shouldn't be too locked into a bass line. What works in the studio might not work live, especially in a trio.

See, I was listening to Clapton's "One More Car, One More Rider", the recording from his 2001 tour, and I've always liked how Nathan East pays homage to Jack without copying him. And Nathan's played those parts differently on other live Clapton recordings. As he should, it's a different band every time.

I don't know this as a fact, just my suspicion. | You can't control who records your songs, only who gets paid when they do and licensing of the recording for other media besides recordings.

I just picked up the recent re-issues of the Average White Band's original albums...if I'm reading the liner notes correctly, AWB was the opening act for Eric Clapton's '73 concert at the Rainbow.
