Overrated Bass Players

Sign in to disble this ad
I has been a few years since this topic was discussed so I am curious to see if perceptions have changed. Which bass players to think are overrated? Here is my list.

Flea – Red Hot Chili Peppers
Tony Kanal – No Doubt
Mike Dirnt – Green Day
Duff McKagan – Guns ‘n’ Roses
Nikki Sixx – Motley Crue
Krist Novoselic – Nirvana
Jason Newstead – Metalica, Ozzy Osbourne
Lemmy Kilmster - Motorhead

Problem is most people here mistake gymnastics for talent. I bet Nikki Sixx laughs his ass off on the way to the bank with the checks he gets from writing almost ALL of the Motley stuff himself. I'd take that talent over the slappidy slap crap any day! But of course YMMV...

Me!

People keep coming up to me after gigs and telling me how great I am.

That crap needs to stop, and it needs to stop NOW!!

...cause it makes my life a living HELL, okay?....a living HELL!

and THAT'S why I won't do two shows a night. I won't do it! I won't!!

Are we going on their bass parts played in songs, or off some instance where someone has seen them "get down" and play a solo or something?

I've been completely blown away by bassists who play pretty straightforward in their songs, but could really thump on their own and have serious chops. Sometimes it just depends on what goes best with the song, not what's most impressive for you.

Nikki Sixx?

I've never heard of him being over rated. I usually hear smack talk!

To me, a lot of jazz and funk players are worshipped mostly due to chops it seems...

Or, i'm crazy.

I didn't know any of them were rated...I know Flea is highly thought of by a few, however, the rest of that list,I would say their popularity is due to being with the bands they're connected with...Take Lemmy for instance. I never heard of him being a "bass" god as much as a "metal" god(and we all know Lemmy IS god) but, I think its more about the man then his chops..I mean, who's more METAL than Lemmy?.....I think most would say they(the ones on that list) are pretty good or he's their favorite but,I never really heard anyone put them in the same class as Geddy or Jack Bruce or Jaco or Jamerson ect....
