Regarding overall playing technique, I'd have to pick Entwhistle though. Factor in some mean-ass writing skills, and JPJ pulls ahead. IMO, of course.

| | | | JPJ becuase he inspired me... It was the summer of 1980. I was 15 and heard Led Zep II for the first time. The next day I bought a bass guitar!
Ironically, 20 years later I saw JPJ (on his Zooma tour) and was captivated with Nick Beggs' playing on the Chapman stick and became a Stick player too!
Nothing aginst John Entwistle as he is obviously an outstanding bass player as well! |

Entwhistle had a more fluent finger style and tapping to utilizing harmonics (Also his aggressive pentatonic lead lines he was well known for), he could build a "fortress" of a bass line around the "Who". Me thinks he used alot more high end in his sound than JPJ.Wasn't too shabby of a geetar player either.
Keep in mind, JPJ was a studio musician and Musical director/arranger (The rolling stones, Andrew Oldham Orchestra, etc..) before he was in zeppelin though. This is where I believe his song writing skills (not just as a bass player alone) surpass Entwhistle's.
Theres no comparing of the 2, It's all opinion, that's it.

| | | | This is like apples and onions, very different players, one flashy, the other laid back. What they have in similar is the greatness.
