P Diddy's Makin the Band.

First off let me state that I'm not a fan of this dude and I definitely wasn't a fan of the other Making the Band shows. I really don't listen to hip hop or r&b and in general hate the whole MTV thing.

BUT!!! This show was freakin sweet. They tried out a ton of musicians, on a stage, to two different songs, and everybody was sick. Of course you wouldn't show up if you weren't a b.a. but I was seriously impressed. I'm also pretty happy that the musicians for these types of bands are finally getting some air time. God knows they've been slugging it out and making some very untalented people look very good for years. It's cool they're finally getting recognized for all of their hard work.

I recommend you check it out. Minus all the "Real World" drama that is sure to take place, the performances should be great. And all of the bass players were nasty.

Yeah I caught it, and I was seriously impressed by the amount of young talent he has trying out. I'm not a fan of P. Diddy at all, but I'm definitely glad that he's taking this direction for this season of that show. I was especially impressed by the bass players and the drummers (many of them female). It's great to see actual musicians being appreciated anywhere, but especially within a hip hop/ modern r&b setting, where musicianship isn't often appreciated, or even seen as being needed.

Y'all beat me to it. It would have been nice to hear more of what the musicians were playing, but definitely some talented people there. Only issue that will prevent me from following closely is the potential of more drama than music..being as how they'll all be in the same house and duking it out.

Youre kidding right? Danity Kane's first album (and I think the second) went platinum led by "Damaged". I dont really listen to R&B today, and Im not a Puffy fan, but theres no denying his success, regardless of the hateration.

Cool! My bandmates and I auditioned for this in NYC a few months ago - some seriously killing players at that hit! Everybody could play. The cats who got called back were the REALLY cool, crazy ones who played more modern stuff.

I believe they held several rounds of auditions in L.A., Chicago, and Detroit as well.

When is the show on? I'd like to tune in.

I caught it as well. The young bassist Jamareo looks like he is having fun.
Im not to happy with the MDs they seem like a-holes
but i believe it comes on monday nites
Im gonna Tivo it and just speed thru all the B.S with diddy and
just concentrate on the players. I liked that latina. It was sad
they thought she didnt hit hard enough...she had great groove and time and they
could always mike her drumset.

The keyboard player MD especially seemed to have something going on with him, but maybe they all got caught up in the aura of being around Diddy. I always find it somewhat amusing when folk have "made it" then seem to forget that they were once just like those very people they are critiquing.

I'm seriously watching the Jamereo guy. That kid has a serious old school sound and doesn't have an attitude. Humble and skilled. Thought that might be his down fall.

I'm not sure how accurate this is, I heard a few people that didn't get call backs and some that did...my conclusion, they weren't really looking for people that could actually play, they were looking for people that would fit in with the theme of the series.

That makes sense, too. I thought everybody that I saw that got called back could play but only the ones who also looked and acted the part got the call back. I also saw some cats who could obviously play get shut down big time for reasons that were not so obvious.

For what it's worth, my buddy made it through the first round and he was tight but "Heartless" ain't exactly Chopin... Bottom line, they're making a reality TV show about musicians so their top priority is getting people to watch.

The bass player, Jamareo Artis, has a great sound and he's only 19! Very cool.

Edit: By the way, Phil, your website with all the charts on it is awesome!

I love the show!

And on the pianist, Im really pulling for Brocket. Such an odd dude, but he has been through a lot and can really play!

But some great basses too, Lakland, Fender, Tobias, and a few more.

And if Jamareo is the cat playing the Fender Pbass, he is definitely a killer. They told him to "Give me sumtin", and he tore it up!

If the show encourages or inspires people to actually play, then I'm all for it.

I'm just hoping for the guest appearances from other guys in the scene that might roll through...

That was the first thng I thought when I watched the show. Everybody is trying to carry that Puffy Swag. Damn it, just be yourself. I think they've forgotten they were once in those shoes.

I watched the new one "back to basics" and when they were elimanating people they got to the sheet music and it seemed really easy to play. It didn't seem like they were very thorough in choosing...

I'm watching the show right now...I'm honestly loving the emphasis they're showing (if only for this moment) on theory, reading SN, and real practice. I'm sure there are parts of the show that are fake, but in general the musicianship on the show is top notch.

I didnt see the newest one, only the first episode. I wish I knew the time and day for the show.
