I have a VHS recording of the TV show "At the Maintenance Shop". Corea / Weckl / Patitucci playing at from around '88.
Chick's a total eccentric, sometimes noodling far beyond excess. But, when his hands are not in 5 minutes of hyper spider mode, his music is beautiful and tasteful.
Dave Weckl did a fabulous job of groove and technically brilliant fills.
John P. - his playing, both DB and on the Ken Smith, were fantastic. The tone of both basses (at least for the video feed for television) were great. Haven't heard any of his recent stuff, on the TRB.
Re: Yamahas - saw footage of a Clapton concert with Nathan East, his bass sounded incredibly good on the video but of course being there (hearing the room) was probably different.
