Patitucci Gig Report (June 2007)

Just caught Patitucci this past Saturday, touring for his last CD, Line by Line. Brian Blade on drums! and a guitar player that escapes my memory.

Nice gig. Nothing spectacular, as I have seen Patitucci in other settings that thought it was a bit more interesting, but nice nonetheless to see such master(s) play.

His Yamaha signature sounded great. He goes for a modern P-Bass / neck pickup when supporting that is very nice, very throaty. He was using his Walter Woods amp with SWR cabs. Bright, modern tone, but still very round and nice, never harsh.

I've always been a fan of Patitucci's phrasing - - I find it very individual, original and unmistakable.

He also plays some mean arco. . . really beautiful.

That's it. Just feeling fortunate to have seen these cats in person.

Anybody?

Adam Rogers was probably playing guitar. I can't wait to see them when they come to Atlanta.

Great! You mean he dialed in a P bass "sound" with his signature right? He didn't switch out his neck pickup for a P did he?

Also that guitar player is most likely Adam Rogers, who for me, is just awesome.

Thanks for the report. John is pretty much the premier bass player around right now, with room only left for opinion and preference.

Nice report, thanks for that. Sounds like a ton of fun. I saw Patitucci on upright years ago in NYC in a very intimate setting, it was a real treat.

John has a real unique voice and never plays any cliches whatsoever, he never seems to get bogged down in what things are "supposed" to sound like.

Adam Rogers. Yes, very good, but I'm sorry to say he was a little too "straight," meaning, a very plain semihollow body sound, and his playing almost too perfect and flawless. I like struggling guitarists, like Scofield or Abercrombie, with a more open ear for experimentation and a bit more bite in their sound. Adam's approach and sound was was a bit two-dimensional.

Lorenzini, yes, I meant neck pickup, not that he put a P-Bass pickup in there. . . you crazy?. . . Nice sound. I have to say it is a very original sound. . . not a Jazz, not a P, not a StingRay, not a Smith. . .

I can dig that. Yes Adam Rogers is a super clean, almost Metheny-like cleanliness. I prefer Rogers over Pat though.

I was just clarifying on the pickup. The TRB series had a P pickup on another model

Anyways, glad you digged it. If you like Scofield, man, you need to check out JP's disc "Now".

Scofield plays his best there.
