Paul D'Amour/Tool/Undertow/Rickenbacker!

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys,

To those of you who know and love the sound of Tool's Undertow, and especially the thundering growl of former bassist Paul D'Amour, let me ask you what kind of gear he used (outside of studio compressors, limiters and the like) to nail that sound. I saw them twice with Undertow and live his sound was just as good. So beyond the Rickenbacker (he used a Stingray on occasions), what effects did he use? Anyone know this?

I'm basically in love with his sound. Don't get me wrong, Justin Chancellor's sound is gold, but D'Amour's sound is more my type of thing, and probably more affordable as well!

Pretty sure he used rounds, although not sure if they were nickel vs SS. I have a mesa 400 amp and can get that sound pretty easily by boosting the mids and cranking the gain while playing my ric with either the bridge pu soloed or both pups full on. I don't think pull was a big pedal freak on that album, but he used chorus and delay on his stingray for "No Quarter".

I too am in agreement with the OP and am in love with Paul's tone. I managed to pull it off pretty well with just a pre-amp and my (now shot) old peavey kb100 amp using my burst Ray 34. Check it out in this cover (HD + quality headphones recommended) ;-)
