Paul D'Amour vs. Justin Chancellor

Who else thinks Paul D'Amour was a better bassist for Tool? I love his tone through his Ric, with pick Opiate and Undertow are great great albums with superb bass playing. I'm not saying Chancellor sucks but for Tool he is not as good as fit as D'Amour. There is some small similarities sure they both play with a pick and are both great players. I just miss D'Amour's style with Tool, 10,000 days and Lateralus is were Tool is right now musically I guess.

I prefer Justin, I guess. His Wal sounds great when it's not bogged down with effects!

Since I first became a fan after hearing Undertow (especially with Paul's part in Sober), I feel that Tool would not have become what it is without Paul.

For me now though, I feel like Justin is my favorite. Something about the lines he writes that just hook me.

Both are amazing bassist though.

I think Tools music was better when Paul was in the band, and while I do love what Paul did, I prefer Justin as a bass player.

What I mean is, I think Undertow was their best album, it had their best music, but my favorite bass lines are almost all Justin, like Schism, Disposition, and Reflection.

I think that is very true, Justin is the better bass player, but Paul was better for the band.

Ugh, these "vs." threads...

Fact: Paul wrote a huge chunk, if not all of AEnima and Justin pretty much just recorded what you hear on Aenima. Some lines sound like his style, some don't.

I'm sure that if Paul had stuck around (he left because he wanted to do other things and the rest of Tool weren't cool with that at the time) the music would be the same.

I honestly don't think you can compare the two guys cause Paul's best playing is only on one album, Undertow. With Justin we have three... kind of an unfair match up, if you ask me.

However if you take the best playing from both bassists, Undertow with Paul and 10k Days with Justin. I think these guy's have pretty similar styles of writing/playing. Hell, Justins tone on 10K Days is very much like Pauls on Undertows, and I'm sure JC got some inspiration from Paul's playing on Undertow and some of Opiate.

Check out Justin's playing on Peaches "Giving Birth to a Stone" to hear him pre-Tool, playing his Stingray.

I don't prefer either players playing.to each others. Tone, though...

Paul had THE pissed off bass tone. Can't possibly sound any meaner without adding a distortion of some sort. On top of that, it's clear.

As far as tone goes, I prefer Pauls. I LOVE Justins though, I jsut like Pauls rawness.

And to Chris2112, Justin doesn't have effects on all the time and his Wal is never bogged down by them...

He actually has a "clean" tone 90% of the time. He runs the dual channel dirty/clean thing all the time so the distorted channel (via Pro Co Rat and Boss EQ) really doesn't count as an effect.

I'm not saying Paul sucks, but I think Tool's better with Justin.
