PAUL GODDARD

Sign in to disble this ad
This is the bassist that truly turned me on to bass. His fills were amazing and im my opinion his tone was the best. I am a bit biased as towards Paul for reasons I'll not mention. ( for you wondering it's not a gay thing either ) I just would like to know if there are any of his fans still alive and well. I own a ric and an old svt rig because of him and will never part with either.

When I was a kid Paul was one of my favs. I remember getting to see him and Wyzzard from Mother's Finest on the same day! Paul had massive tone and the solo on Champagne Jam was rocking. I tried recently to find out what he was up to but came up with little.

Paul Goddard was a great bass player...his work with ARS was always right on the money.
I had heard that he's now a school teacher in Atlanta,Ga. and doesn't play anymore.....I could be wrong but I think I read that on an old ARS website.

I remember an ad (he was a Peavey endorser) that stated he used 80 sets of strings in a year!

I love the solo in Champagne Jam too and it was one of the first solos that I learned to play. I loved his tone and had the pleasure of seeing ARS live many years ago at Kings Island in Cincinnati.

Nice to hear there are a few of us Goddard fans left. I have a copy of "another mans woman" and that bass solo is my favorite also. My favorite bass lines were on "Spooky"

PG was a huge influence on me

Count me as another who was influenced by Paul Goddard. When I was in the 3rd-4th grade, my dad took us to see live music frequently, and ARS was the most memorable (in Wilmington, NC).

I vividly remember Paul's live Champagne Jam solo- that was my introduction to the bass. The man had the attention of everyone in the hall with his huge, grinding tone and his PRESENCE on stage. After the concert, I was determined to learn the solo- so I repeatedly listened to it on LP and hacked it out on my dad's classical guitar that night.

I grew up in Georgia in the 70's and was a big ARS (and Southern rock, in general) fan. Paul Goddard is one of the great underrated bassists. Loved that massive tone.

I saw ARS live back in 1980 at the Wisconsin State Fair. That big dude playing the Rickenbacker bass had the grooviest tones and tastiest licks. Ive been a fan of his ever since.

edit: my memory now reminds me the ARS show I saw wasn't at State Fair, but at Summerfest (Milwaukee) on the main stage, back when the main stage was at the north end of the grounds.

Well It appears I am not the only one left. I saw Paul and the ARS many, MANY times during my childhood and beyond. You all have made another old guy smile.

I saw ARS when they did the Champagne Jam tour. He actually was an influence in my starting to play bass. I was about 16 at the time. I still own the Champagne Jam album on vinyl and have to say that the picture of him on the back is probably the least flattering picture I've ever seen.

I never knew he was gay, and knowing that I can't imagine that he was wildly successful in those cirlcles. Think the Champagne Jam picture.

I was always a Paul Goddard fan as well. He played some songs on Kerry Livgren's Seeds Of Change album from 1980.

Here are some cuts with Paul on bass.

This song has Ronnie James Dio on lead vocals too (great bass tone on this one)

The thread above is from the BABP forum. Lot's of good info about bass guitarist Paul there.

I wonder why the ARS album "Are You Ready" which is a live LP, isn't available on CD?? It is a KILLER album!

Regretfully, never got to see Paul live, but back in the very early days of music video- there were a small handful of videos that rotated on a local station. The two that had the most profound affect on me were a live video of The Who doing Who are you, and the Atlanta Rhythym Section doing Spooky. Southern rock was huge in Florida back then, and so ARS sounded like home- but it was PG's wicked bass that entranced me- he was probably more of an earlier inspiration than Entwhistle. I think PG was a big reason I was glad I chose to play bass guitar
