Paul Jackson

I wasnt sure where to post this but I recently read that Paul Jackson used a blonde Fender Telecaster bass on the Headhunters album. I always thought he was a P bass guy but I guess I was wrong. I only have the Headhunters album and he's one of my favorites.

Paul's a great player. I have a bunch of Herbie's albums that he played on and a Headhunters album (sans Herbie). He always has very creative and different approaches to the bassline IMO.

I think he played mostly P basses, but i do remember hearing about a tele bass too. sorry i can't help you there.

The early 50's PBass and Tele bass are pretty much the same thing. Fender Precision basses had really established themselves in the 60's and Fender wanted to bring back early basses and they didn't do reissues back then so they named it the Tele bass. They are nice basses.

Paul Jackson is great and the Headhunter album is a classic CD I still play all the time.

Paul's Rootbeer P-Bass on maple neck is what he gigged for a while.

Great sounding bass... But PJ's Headhunters stuff is ALL revolutionary.

Paul "action" jackson is a funk bomb! I've the pleasure to see him twice--almost 30 years apart--mid 70's w/ HH&Headhunters, and a few years back w/ Mike clark, fred wesley, larry goldings, bill summers--whoa!

Paul is a great Bassist...one of my influences. I can't help you on the Bass front as I knew him only as a P-bass man.

But if you only have Headhunters you should REALLY check out:

Thrust, Manchild, and Secrets.

These are other "Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters" records simular to Headhunters. Released in the early-mid Seventies. They are Great and Paul does shine. Also for a REAL treat there is one live CD from 1975. IT IS GREAT it is about 35 dollars on amazon.com, but worth every penny.

Also Check out Paul today on www.bassplayer.tv.

And the CD "The Return of the Headhunters". also good stuff.

+1, it's called 'Flood', great stuff. He also did an album about fifteen years ago with Mike Clark & sax great Kenny Garrett called the 'The Funk Stops Here', in the liner notes he is holding his old Tele bass with a humbucker of some kind in it.
About that same time they did a instructional video that I wold think would show up on youtube sometime.

I read or heard somewhere that Paul Jackson and Rocco Prestia were roomates for a while back in Oakland. Just imagine the funky P-bass grooves that came out of that apartment!

Dr. Cheese I read an interview with Rocco and he said they were roomates. There was also another bassist that lived with them. I could only image the jams they had.
