Question Paul Jackson Bad Pocket???

Sign in to disble this ad
I know I'll be flamed for this, but over the years I've listened to Paul Jackson, it sounds to me like he has bad pocket and poor technique. Listen to Hang up you Hang ups, Actual Proof, Spank a Lee, Palm Grease and many others. Maybe my ears just aren't big enough, but he sounds like he just doesn't get the groove. Can anybody talk me down?

Dude those songs define what pocket is. Stop listening so hard and slip behind the beat. Or smoke a j or something.

I beg to differ--I think he sits in the pocket pretty tight. I've never really heard anything by him where he really sits at the front of the groove, but that's what makes him so funky in my opinion, and to me he was a good counter to herbie hancock's left hand, which covered bass too, as hancock always seemed to sit on top of the groove in his basslines to me.

oh man if you don't think actual proof is pocket.. then you don't know what pocket is..

A lot of his grooves are behind or ahead of the beat.. but they are in the pocket alright

There is an old saying about a forest and some trees. Not to flame you, but how can you not hear it? Or feel it. Someone upstairs from me here said it already, but: Stop listening so hard.

You can listen to that and call it bad in any way, and I'll think you're on drugs. That's live, dude. That's some bigass bass playing. Might not be your thing and that's cool, but that's what most of us call amazing playing.

Yes, I know between the two parts this jam is 20 minutes long, but Paul Jackson just gets better and better.

Yeah, and James Brown was a lousy dancer and Ray Charles couldn't sing.
