Paul's bass was almost always recorded LAST in the multi-tracking process. The bass cabinet was placed in an otherwise empty room or isolation booth and recorded with a figure eight patterned mic. This made the bass parts extremely present and supremely well "rounded" in the mix. In those days, bass parts were usually recorded at the beginning of the multi-track process either as a drum/bass live section or as the second track after the drums.
