| | | | Paul S. Denman...There is another Sky...walker I love the usual suspects: Jaco, Geddy, Larry G., Bootsy JPJ, Flea, etc. Now that I'm dabbling in upright, I even appreciate Paul Chambers, Ray Brown, and Stanley alot more.
However, Now that I've made the "less is more" rite of passage, I seem to be gravitating towards Paul S. Denman as one of the players that I consider great. I read an interview with him that basically said that he would rather hold it down than "wow" the crowd.
In comparison, without fail, on nights where I say, "I'm gonna play less," I receive more compliments on the playing. Moreover, I downloaded some Sade sheet music to learn some of his lines, and believe it or not, although they sound simple, they are actually artful and somewhat challenging in their simplicity.
Does anyone else think that Paul D. is an awesome player? Who are some other players that in your opinion(s) are underrated yet "Masters" of simplicity? |

| | | | Another Denman fan. He's one of those guys who makes every note count. Look at a tune like "Paradise." The entire line is 2 bars - a total of 4 different notes - played over and over. Yet for all that simplicity it defines the song.
We occasionally break out that tune or Kiss of Life.

I do prefer Sade's earlier records. Really dig the "island" vibe of that stuff.
"Keep Looking" is a fave of mine.
He does wow the crowd, despite what he may say. |

I've listened to him on all the Sade albums but finding additional material or info on him is difficult. His life blends in as much as his playing does. But because of him and him alone I've held on to my older Trace Elliot gear.

Denman is a master of The Groove, i.e. choosing the right note, where to put it, where not to put it, how to use space, how to finesse the release as well as the attack, how to use inflection and nuance, playing rhythmic counterpoint to the drummer (and the rest of the band), etc. etc.
You can learn a LOT about groove - simply by studying Denman...

His playing on the first few records was simple but always had his little cool moments and i loved that.

The older albums, overall, had a more "band" feel to them in my opinion and there was always a little "something" going on with the bass. Now it sounds almost programmed or looped half the time. |

It's just a wow moment all the way through if you really focus in on what's going on. | In one of my courses (years ago) the teacher used "Sweetest Taboo" to discuss a track-by-track breakdown of a pop recording. I think he must have had an article with him from Mix or some similar magazine. Anyway, I remember that the bass on that song was recorded on two separate tracks: one for the main line (played fingerstyle) and one for the "pops". |
