Paul S. Denman...There is another Sky...walker

I love the usual suspects: Jaco, Geddy, Larry G., Bootsy JPJ, Flea, etc. Now that I'm dabbling in upright, I even appreciate Paul Chambers, Ray Brown, and Stanley alot more.
However, Now that I've made the "less is more" rite of passage, I seem to be gravitating towards Paul S. Denman as one of the players that I consider great. I read an interview with him that basically said that he would rather hold it down than "wow" the crowd.
In comparison, without fail, on nights where I say, "I'm gonna play less," I receive more compliments on the playing. Moreover, I downloaded some Sade sheet music to learn some of his lines, and believe it or not, although they sound simple, they are actually artful and somewhat challenging in their simplicity.
Does anyone else think that Paul D. is an awesome player? Who are some other players that in your opinion(s) are underrated yet "Masters" of simplicity?

Another Denman fan. He's one of those guys who makes every note count. Look at a tune like "Paradise." The entire line is 2 bars - a total of 4 different notes - played over and over. Yet for all that simplicity it defines the song.

We occasionally break out that tune or Kiss of Life.

Big fan. His lines are sound simple but are not the easiest to play IMO. I really like the way he avoids cliché and still when you hear one of his lines it sounds very familiar.

Love Denman too.
I do prefer Sade's earlier records. Really dig the "island" vibe of that stuff.
"Keep Looking" is a fave of mine.
He does wow the crowd, despite what he may say.

He's long been one of my favorites. He is among thew most disciplined players I've ever heard.

Flabba Holt, Leroy Sibbles, Robbie Shakespeare, etc. The world of reggae is filled with guys who groove hard and "play less". I love Sade but I'm still trying to get over their stinker of a last album.

"Sweetest Taboo" is just amazing. Where he puts the notes (and doesn't put them)... the note duration... attack... tone. It's just a wow moment all the way through if you really focus in on what's going on.

Paul S Denman is one of those guys that when I heard him for the first time I said to myself "that is the way I want to playing to work..." I've listened to him on all the Sade albums but finding additional material or info on him is difficult. His life blends in as much as his playing does. But because of him and him alone I've held on to my older Trace Elliot gear.

Agreed on all points. Denman is a master of The Groove, i.e. choosing the right note, where to put it, where not to put it, how to use space, how to finesse the release as well as the attack, how to use inflection and nuance, playing rhythmic counterpoint to the drummer (and the rest of the band), etc. etc.

You can learn a LOT about groove - simply by studying Denman...

I love Paul Densman's playing but i think he has really taken that less is more mentality a little too far in the last few Sade records.
His playing on the first few records was simple but always had his little cool moments and i loved that.

I'm inclined to agree. The older albums, overall, had a more "band" feel to them in my opinion and there was always a little "something" going on with the bass. Now it sounds almost programmed or looped half the time.

In one of my courses (years ago) the teacher used "Sweetest Taboo" to discuss a track-by-track breakdown of a pop recording. I think he must have had an article with him from Mix or some similar magazine. Anyway, I remember that the bass on that song was recorded on two separate tracks: one for the main line (played fingerstyle) and one for the "pops".

Yes i can hear that, but it's not that hard to play both parts live.

I agree, Paul grooves like crazy! My favorites are Keep Looking and Siempre Hay Esperanza.
