Paul Simon on SNL (5.13.06)

Anyone see Paul Simon on Saturday Night Live this past Saturday? He had quite a interesting band, but I couldn't recognize the bass player. The bass player was way back in the corner and I just couldn't figure out who it was. Appear Steve Gadd was on drums.

I saw it. It was Bakhiti Kumalo. I was trying to make out what bass he was playing. It was a singlecut 5 of some sort. The 'stock looked like a Benevente.

Does anyone have a videorecording of it?

He was in the shadows, but it was a natural finish.

The best musical performance I've ever seen on SNL was when Paul Simon and Willie Nelson dueted "Graceland". That was amazing.

I'm pretty sure it was a six-string, but it did look like a Bene.

Thanks for the answer, I'm not familiar with him. Got new player to find out more about. Was a hell of a band.

I liked the sound of that band a lot. Great groove. I remember thinking the first tune they played that night was noticeably heavier than Paul Simon performances I'd heard before. But it was a refreshing and welcome change.

Good stuff...

There was a pic of that bass, in Bassplayer.
I believe it's a 6-string.

I saw Bakhiti Kumalo play with his own band up at Wells College about a month ago. Great, great player playing an african/jazz/funk mix with a smokin' NYC all-star band. He had a 4 string fretless singlecut, short scale, and a 6 String singlecut that he said was brand new. I couldn't make out the brand of each one.

For those that don't know, Bakhiti has been playing live on and off for Paul Simon for something like 20 years. He was the guy that wrote the bassline to You Can Call Me Al, as well as the rest of the songs on that album. He played a YCCMA teaser during the show.

I just happened to catch Paul Simon on Good Morning America (I think, or one of the morning news shows) this past Friday. Bakithi Kumalo was there and I was trying to make out the bass. Good lighting but camera work was a bit fast over the band. He had a 4-string fretless that had a single musicman pickup. Natural type finish, may have been a Benevente.
