He's like no other and a super nice guy to boot.

... on a side note, Brand X is the only Phil Collens I really liked. |

Such a refreshing contrast in approach to some of the fretless bandwagon jumpers of that era...Very influential on myself.
Thanks, Jauqo. |

It is indeed an Ibanez,it's a prototype and he's been playing it for a very long. |

Percy, along with Alphonso Johnson, was one on my earliest and biggest influences on fretlesses (along with Michael Henderson). Listening to him and the freedom in his sound made me want to have fun too.
Several years ago when I mentioned this in a "Jaco made all of you play fretless" type threads elsewhere, I was told to be honest and admit my main influence and my first one was Jaco. He wasn't. I still like Percy's non-traditional approach to the instrument. |

here's his link http://www.eulajohn.com/ | I was going to mention Brainstorm. At the time his playing and the solo on "Stormin' " blew me away.
I knew about Bunny through Chick. |

I knew about Bunny through Chick. | In the late 70's Lamont had a solo recording out and played a fretless P Bass and did a killer version of This must be Heaven.
and Bunny was introduced to the masses thru Chick but a few years later he put out a few recordings that were fresh sounding and energetic(on one of the albums he and Stanley Clarke did an awesome duet)
remeber the track by Brand X call Wal to Wal that featured both Percy Jones and Jonh Giblin(both playing fretless Wals). |

That's an interesting website. I was wondering when Deon got in the band.
Sounds like the typical band related stuff people seem to go through. |

I think Deon came along around 77-78 when the recording Stormin came out.I had lamont Johnson's solo recording and that was around 78-79 when it came out.another hidden jewel in R&B Soul music history. |

Those two guys, along with Fernando Saunders with Bohannon, rarely get credit for the way they featured fretless bass in r&b/funk. There is a really nice short piece on Fernando Saunders in the latest issue of Bass Guitar.

Warts and all . I still know every song on it AFAIK that's Fernando on Bohannon's "Let's Start the Dance", easily one of my favorite dance/funk bass performances ever.

| | | | Keeping up with the Jones' Wow, I had forgotten about Percy. I remember when they first came out in the late 70's and being blown away by Percy's fretless and harmonic technqiue that sounded orginal !(read: not a Jaco copier) | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
