I don't consider myself a death metal fan. I like maybe 2 or 3 of the bands, but I respect the hell out of the bassists. And I like Jerroen, He's clearly got a wide pallate for music...Flamenco then Death Metal? Much respect to this real musician!

I know there are a lot of metal haters here, but like Boodakon says, you can't deny this guy's passion and skill.

I saw him last year with Pestilence. Even though I was expecting to see his Warwicks, he played an Ibanez... He and the band absolutely KILLED!!!

Jeroen is my favourite bassist, I think his stuff is incredible!
Seriously he has each octave divided into 72ths!
I am looking forward to the new Obscura album.

Jeroen has had a huge influence on me the past year, influencing me to study microtonality and different tuning temperments which has changed me as a musician. This interview is great. There are still a lot of questions I'd like to have him answer though.

I'm mostly a fusioner and always have been but I rather like what I've heard from Obscura. I mean they've still got the cookie monster vocal but I get a genuine laugh out of the way they do it. I hope they are going for laughs on it too. Or else I guess I am laughing at them. No big deal. But I really do like the Cosmogenesis release.

Other suggested "fusion metal".

Spastic Ink
Counter-World Experience
Cynic
Exhivious
Mörglbl
Spaced Out
Mindflowers

You're going to get some awesome cutting edge bass ( and more ) from almost any release you can get from any of those bands.

Another band I get good laughs from on the Cookie Monster level is Cephalic Carnage. And I don't mean to really be making fun of these guys by saying I laugh at them. I really do enjoy it only for some reason they are somehow taking it to a "comical" level. No disrespect at all meant by that either but somehow the music makes me crack up laughing.

I hope somebody actually gets that.

And the Cephalic Carnage release I like is called Mislead By Certainty.

I think Len does try to be a bit humorous with his vocals at times. They being said, the guy has one hell of a death growl. As far as Obscura's vocals, they're German which means they're deadly serious about what they do.

I unfortunately can't watch that video right now, but the second I get home I will. I seriously love Jeroen's playing, he's easily one of the most talented metal bassists I've ever heard.

The new pestilence release is going to be insane (i hope), a low F# on a fretless thumb in a death metal band, sign me up. Really curious how they're going to mix that.

Obscura just posted a song from the new album on their facebook. http://www.facebook.com/#!/RealmOfObscura

I'm at work right now so I can't check it out yet, but I'm dying to hear it.
I recall Jeroen saying that his mission for this album was to find a way to make true Arabic Maqam fit in death metal. I'm really curious to see if he's succeeded because no one really has before, usually when Arabic music is mixed with western genres it's more of a psuedo-arabic style. Jeroen came closer than anybody I've heard attempt before on the Cosmogenesis album. His knowledge of intonation and extensive studying of the 72-tone temperment allows him to nail the intonation of Arabic Maqam very well.

Got to take a listen. It's interesting, a pretty big departure from the Cosmogenesis sound. Jeroen's bass sounds great, he recorded this album using the Jonas Hellborg rig.

Check out the bass work around 3:10. Fantastic. Love hearing this sort of thing in heavy music. So rare.

Bumping

Today Jeroen confirmed that Warwick is working on a signature model for him, it will be a fretless Thumb NT 7 string. Which as far as I know will be Warwicks first 7 string.

Yeah, I'm very interested to see what this beast will end up like. The reason for the bass is that Jeroen uses a low F# on the new Pestilence album.

That's awesome! I'm sure it'll be WAY out of my price range but it'll be nice to look at at least.
