I've just been listening to some of my old Thin Lizzy stuff and reading Phil Lynott's biography on wikipedia. Nothing I didn't already know, but still very sad to read again.

A great band that I've enjoyed for 35 years, and a really sad loss of a talented musician at the age of only 36 (24 years ago - he'd be 61 now!).

RIP Phil.

As a special treat for my fellow TBers, here's a track that doesn't get that much airplay and might serve as a fine example of what a great band Phil was playing in back then. If you like it, then the album "Jailbreak" is what you're after and it's an absolute classic.

I got to tour with Fay Macman, who got his start as TL's lighting guy. He later became their production manager up until Phil's passing.

The stories Fay told of the early days of TL made the Led Zep boys look like punters. I still listen to Live and Dangerous fairly regularly.

I loved that band when I was a kid.

Here's a picture of me and Phil in front of his favorite pub in Dublin. Pretty cool that they put up that statue in his memory.

This!!!!

A lot of his songs were real-life and many hinted at the tragedy in his life and future.

Next time you're in Dublin, go to the upstairs bar at Eamonn Doran's in Temple Bar. They have the old Thin Lizzy sign with the light bulbs that use to hang behind the band on stage.

The rest of Thin Lizzy gets back together every year and plays a concert in Dublin with guest singers.

I lived in Dublin for a few years and use to see an old Hippie-ish looking guy with a big bushy mustache and mutton chops walking around Rathmines with a cane. One day he came into an open mic at the Uppercross pub with someone carrying his sax case. Everyone treated him like royalty and when he played he blew the roof off the place. He seemed like a friendly enough bloke so introduced myself the next time I saw him and it turns out he was the legendary John 'Irish' Earle who use to tour with Thin Lizzy and played the sax solo on "Dancing in the Moonlight".

John was in very bad health and financial straights but always in a good mood. I would sit in Slattery's and buy him pints every couple weeks and he would tell me classic stories about Phil, touring the world and playing music in the 60s, 70s and 80s. He carried around a small notebook that listed every recording he ever played on. The list was incredible. He recorded and played with everyone from Ian Dury to Johnny Thunders to The Clash ("London Calling") to Katrina & the Waves ("Walking on Sunshine") to Joan Jett to Motorhead to Musical Youth to U2 to Al Jarreau to Graham Parker & the Rumour to Desmond Dekker to Shalamar to Ashford & Simpson to Billy Connolly to Tracy Ullman to Rory Gallagher to Mike & the Mechanics to the theme from Fraglerock!!!

He told me the greatest day of his life was at the Isle of Wright when he was asked by Jimi Hendrix to get up on stage and jam with his band AND THEN THE SAME DAY Bob Dylan asked him up on stage with his band!!!! I use to make him tell that story with every detail every time I drank with him. My friends were amazed by him whenever I introduced him and got him telling stories.

I can't say enough how happy, kind and warm John was and how generous he was to share his experiences. He was a true gentleman.

I moved back to the US and about a year later I heard from friends that John passed away. I'm sure my experience of spending time listening to John is not that unique. He was much loved and respected by everyone. I was told that a memorial concert was held for him and all the boyos from Thin Lizzy played. I know he is truly missed by many.
