What do you guys think of Phoenix, the bassist from Linkin Park (a.k.a. Dave Farrell). I personally think he's pretty good, and he knows when to cut back on his lines.

they're an awesome band, tho i wouldn't really listen to anything post Hybrid Theory, other than a song or two.

His tone is good though and he holds it down but theres absolutetly no personality, nahmean?, like, you can't put him in the studio with a different group, hear the recording and go, "yeah thats Phoenix on bass" because there would be no signature to tell you that it is. I truly hope he opens up on the next album because they're a great band.

...plus, Linkin Park is a Roller Coaster. |

...Phoenix's lines might well be programmed given how they sound... |

I am curious as to what people think of his lines in light of last year's release Minutes to Midnight. It was one of my favorite albums of 2007, and I thought it showed much musical growth in the band as a whole. I like what he contributed to the overall sound.
What say the rest of you?

I'm no linkin park fan, i think they're overrated, but calling them generic, boring, bitchy and ripping off U2 is a bit much |

Did Pheonix even do the bass parts on Hybrid Theory and Meteora? I think it was their really bad guitarist, who sounds like a keyboardist being raped by a gorilla.
I think Minutes to midnight was an okay album, it just wasn't linkin park, and I'd hoped for a more "organic" metal approach. And Pheonix does an okay job on it, he could've made himself stand out some more though.
PS: U2 copy or not, Shadow of the day is an amazing song, and Chester Bennington really proves himself as one of the leading vocalist in modern rock.

I swear the bass player used a different Music Man for each song - He must have had 15 different MM's back there! And they were all shiny! They looked brand spankin new!
Not really my kind of vibe due to the simplicity of his lines. I prefer a more bass driven music and I find Linkin Park very guitar driven.

Everyone needs to go take a look at the band that Dave was in before Linkin Park: Tasty Snax. It's a Christian band (YMMV), but it was very, VERY funky and bass driven, if a bit childish in its description of religion. Tasty Snax, and Dave, was one of the key reasons I picked up the bass in the first place...I wanted to play lines like he was.
As for his new stuff in LP...meh.

Relevant bass tracks include My Greatest Day, Randomness, and Freedom. Tasty Snax -- Run Joseph Run

I think that I would like to here him overplay so I could tell if he really was holding back or not. just because they stick to whole notes in the song doesn't mean they are holding back at all. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
