Phoenix from Linkin Park (a.k.a. Dave Farrell)

What do you guys think of Phoenix, the bassist from Linkin Park (a.k.a. Dave Farrell). I personally think he's pretty good, and he knows when to cut back on his lines.

yeah, i like him! he has nice tone too. very classic Stingray sound, i love it.

they're an awesome band, tho i wouldn't really listen to anything post Hybrid Theory, other than a song or two.

I can't wait for their new album. Supposed to be out late this year/early next from what I've heard.

What do I think of Phoenix? It gets real hot in the summer and it is sort of dead music wise to me...

My wife is a fan... loves Chester's voice (from the studio at least). The stuff is pretty ok in my book too. I'll have to watch for the new disc.

Wish he would open up a little more. He NEVER does anything but the bassline, not even a bend, slide, vibrato, harmonic, NOTHING! His tone is good though and he holds it down but theres absolutetly no personality, nahmean?, like, you can't put him in the studio with a different group, hear the recording and go, "yeah thats Phoenix on bass" because there would be no signature to tell you that it is. I truly hope he opens up on the next album because they're a great band.

I've seen his bassbook, looked pretty standard to me...

Just one of those bassists who never really shines or has anything unique about them, at all. These kind of guys are defined by the bands they play in. Sadly for this guy, I hate Linkin Park.

+1. He could be the next coming of Jaco or Jamerson, but in LP you'd never get the chance to know it.

...plus, Linkin Park is a Roller Coaster.

I don't know about that...Jamerson backed a lot of different aritsts and brought his own unique flavour with him...

...Phoenix's lines might well be programmed given how they sound...

Did a search for any threads on Phoenix and found this one.

I am curious as to what people think of his lines in light of last year's release Minutes to Midnight. It was one of my favorite albums of 2007, and I thought it showed much musical growth in the band as a whole. I like what he contributed to the overall sound.

What say the rest of you?

i hate this band and all ive ever heard the bass do in their songs is boring quater,1/2 and whole notes played behind bitchy vocals and generic sounding metal guitars and "beats". the last song i heard by them it sounded like a really bad U2 rip off. their videos are equally as crap. a band who takes themselves way too seriously.

wow, lots of anger here

I'm no linkin park fan, i think they're overrated, but calling them generic, boring, bitchy and ripping off U2 is a bit much

I used to be a huge linkin park fan, but today I find it far too "artificial", since I'm much more into the more "organic" music genres. Did Pheonix even do the bass parts on Hybrid Theory and Meteora? I think it was their really bad guitarist, who sounds like a keyboardist being raped by a gorilla.

I think Minutes to midnight was an okay album, it just wasn't linkin park, and I'd hoped for a more "organic" metal approach. And Pheonix does an okay job on it, he could've made himself stand out some more though.

PS: U2 copy or not, Shadow of the day is an amazing song, and Chester Bennington really proves himself as one of the leading vocalist in modern rock.

I saw them in concert when they were in Detroit a couple months ago. I swear the bass player used a different Music Man for each song - He must have had 15 different MM's back there! And they were all shiny! They looked brand spankin new!

Not really my kind of vibe due to the simplicity of his lines. I prefer a more bass driven music and I find Linkin Park very guitar driven.

For the record, Dave was still in a different band when Hybrid Theory came out, so he didn't lay down the bass tracks on that one.

Everyone needs to go take a look at the band that Dave was in before Linkin Park: Tasty Snax. It's a Christian band (YMMV), but it was very, VERY funky and bass driven, if a bit childish in its description of religion. Tasty Snax, and Dave, was one of the key reasons I picked up the bass in the first place...I wanted to play lines like he was.

As for his new stuff in LP...meh.

Here, let me help...it's way out of date, so I uploaded Tasty Snax' first album...

the bass parts always seemed boring to me. the music is all vocals and beats ... its just a nu-metal/hip hop mashup with angsty lyrics aimed at white kids. the bass is pretty much irrelevant, as it is in most mainstream rap. its all low end 'crunk' with no soul. although im sure none of that is his fault .. im sure he gets pretty much told what to play. but hey, if i joined a band that was touring that much and making that much money, I would be glad to do whatever they said as long as those paychecks were coming in.

He knows when to cut back on his lines? I think that I would like to here him overplay so I could tell if he really was holding back or not. just because they stick to whole notes in the song doesn't mean they are holding back at all.
