Wow...all I can say is wow. I have been listening to the John Mayer Trio a lot latelyand I knew that Pino was good but freaking wow. He plays a million notes...and every one is in the right place.

I am starting this thread just to sing the praises of the Welshman. I mean it is true that experienced players of that caliber all have monster chops but choose not to use them...the question is...what the hell is that guy choosing not to play...wow.

His tone is like butter melting in a pan that will later be used to make sweet cookies.

Thoughts?

Just recently saw the DVD with John Mayer, Pino, GREAT drummer too..

The man is like a rock, it´s almost frustrating...

One of the best bass players out there, without a doubt.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pm7l7XfV_Pg

Quote from Steve Jordan: "What sets him apart from other bass heavies is his taste. I’ve never heard him play a bad idea! Even the very best players sometimes go for something that’s not really happening, but not Pino. The first idea he comes up with is always great—and just when you think the part couldn’t be more fitting, he comes up with something better. Stylistically, he’s the complete package; the depth of his funk is ridiculous, and then he’ll turn around and play the most melodic thing you’ve ever heard."

There is a run that ends in a chord near the end of Good Love Is On The Way on the Where the light is disc that just makes me sick. I wonder if he reads. I am sure he does but he plays like an old rock god.

Have no fear, your Pino jazz chops needs will soon be fixed.

If I am correct, I believe Pino ask for recordings and not charts when learning for artists. I think it was in last BP with him on the cover.

A lot of his tone really has to do with his bass set up. He uses flats on a 62 P that has been played to death. I would love to feel the neck on that thing. Apparently the frets are worn down to the point of almost being fretless...He likes it that way.

This is one of my favorite JMT/Pino tracks. When JM kicks in the lead at 2:40, Pino takes it to a level unattainable by mortal men.

Complete is a great word to describe Pino. I love his line on "Murder" from David Gilmour's "About Face" album and "Give Blood" from Pete Townshend's "White City: A Novel".

I'm going to see him for the first time this Sunday!
He will play in The Netherland, together with Philippe Saisse and Simon Phillips.
Very exciting!

Here's some more of Pino killing on fretless with Manu Katche and Dominic Miller. And here's another of him playing with JMT. I've been a big fan of Pino's since I first heard and saw him with Paul Young back in the early 80s. I've also been lucky enough to play his MM fretless when it was in for servicing.

I've loved Pino for years. I first heard of him through his work with Gary Numan.

Boys Like Me

Music for Chameleons Cool clip from 1982.

That JMT vid is "school"! Look how tiny that bass looks...haha.

Pino is so the man. I know I have been hearing his playing for years without knowing it, but like many younger players, I have become aware of him through the John Mayer trio. Amazing playing on this album, he has mastered what I am striving to do: creative, dynamic bass playing that never gets in the way and makes the song better.

By the way, I understand he will be performing on the upgoming "Battle Studies" by John Mayer trio

Got a copy of this yesterday. (early)
C D is more pop, rock, with a hint of Beatles.
Jordan and Pino, groove, as always.
A little more mellow, not as edgy as JMT Live.
It's growing on me. (Mayer does that)
