Now, that is a worthy project. Players would get A LOT more out of transcribing them for themselves, but for those inclined to take short cuts, this is great.

thanks man
i totally agree with you but i wouldn't have been able to do so ten years ago (i probably would have thought that i could but would have ended missing some notes and/or important details)
I thought i knew those lines pretty well after like 12 years of heavy listening for some of them and i discovered lots of new stuff by transcribing all these lines note for note

I played a cruel prank on someone I know.... he was a classically-trained guy who was prone to sneering at rock music and to bragging how he could transcribe anything by ear.

So I asked him if he had ever heard the song Purple Rain, and when he said no, asked if he could transcribe it so I could learn it.

Five days later I get an angry drunken phone call at 1 AM, in which this guy complained he had spent hours trying to figure it out, couldn't find a recording of the tune with the bass part, and that he had dismantled and reassembled his stereo to see why the bass was missing.

Awesome. Pino is one of the guys that I had not been too familiar with until recently and I am trying to get into playing some of his tunes right now. I really dig chicken grease, that bass line is perfect for that song. Nice work.

"D comes up with amazing bass parts in his left hand. He would play me about 80% of a line and the remaining 20% was open to my interpretation. My approach, which he encouraged, was to constantly develop the line with subtle variations, à la Jamerson" (BassPlayer Magazine-May 2000 issue)

Besides, Chicken Grease was originally produced by Jay Dee (aka J Dilla) and was supposed to be featured on Common's 'Like Water For Chocolate' album but D'Angelo dug it so much that he managed to get it for his own album (it was traded with 'Geto Heaven (part 1)' which features D'Angelo ?uestlove and Pino btw)

So Chicken Grease's bassline might have nothing to see with D or Pino in the first place actually

Dilla is one of my favorites of all time, a true genius. I rather hear him drop his MPC on the floor than listen to some bass wanking any day.

I love Theolonious , the feel is VERY VERY hard to get right on bass. The way Dilla chops time changed the way I hear music.
Classic , I think my favorite Dilla beat is the entire DONUTS record......

yeah same here bro that's why i dig D'Angelo's Playa Playa so much: it sounds like a live Dilla beat!
if i had to choose only one record it'd be Like Water For Chocolate (with SV's Fantastic close second)
