Can anyone recommend some "essential" recordings that every bass player should have from Pino? Thanks in advance. |

Or otherwise any bass playing by anyone which is similar to this? |

| | | | Love his work with Joan Armatrading also. CD 'The Shouting Stage'... amazing.
Edit: Also, remember 'Nakita' by Elton John... amazing groove and some tasty Pino fills!

Go West by Go West.
Any of his new project with PSP.
Continuum and Try by John Mayer.
And all of the previous sugestions.
For some pure Pino that isn't Pino get Like A Prayer by Madonna (extended version). Guy Pratt channels Pino at the end to the extent that when Pratty heard it he thought they'd used someone else.

| This was the track that had us all going 'who the heck is THAT' back in the day. It sounds just a bit '80's cheezy' at this point, but still a beautiful song and just a scary good bass track that was very fresh at the time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUKBu...eature=related |

D'Angelo, Voodoo (Charlie Hunter & D'angelo himself also play bass on this one, ?uestlove's drumming on this is insane, Voodoo is a true masterpiece on how to play rhythm section.)
John Mayer: Try |

I was in a band that used to do a few Paul Young covers from that era "Wherever I lay my hat", "Tear your playhouse down", "Come back and stay" and The Butcher's Lad song (Everytime you go away, you take a piece of meat with you).
I worked very hard on these and had them nailed pretty good, as you can imagine I was in bass heaven playing songs where the bassline is so central. However, my favourite Pino bassline of that era (probably my favourite Pino bassline ever) is "Wonderland" - love the choice of notes and the way it builds and builds. I can play it reasonably well but unfortunately I've never been in a band that has covered it live.
The bass is further back in the mix, so it's not as "stand out" as some of the other stuff, and it can be difficult to pick out what Pino is doing on the original track, but this guy on youtube nails it pretty damn good - better than I can for sure (although I like to think I'm not too far behind) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OU77o...eature=related
