I'm playing at the hardrock subbing for friends in a 3band show Distant Signals ( rush trib ), the band I'm subbing for ( CodeWhiskey ), and a no-name band called the Scofflaws on 12-21.

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and live in Pittsburgh. I have a bass and enjoy playing but have never had lessons. I have tried to find teachers but they always turn out to be guitarists who own basses and not really bass instructors. I love jazz, classical, rock etc and would love to find a good teacher in the area. I have tried google searching and craigslist with no luck. Anyone in the Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, Oakland area interested in giving lessons?

welcome to the Pitts thread where the Steelers lose and we don't even mention it at all....

I also know teachers in the area ( I work in shadyside ), but what exactly are you looking for learning wise because a lot of the guitar teachers around here are really good if you are just starting out.

Thanks alot amimbari, I am looking for full instruction on technique, reading, theory, song styles, jamming etc. I basically want to immerse mysef in the bass.

yes, any good guitar teacher can teach you that stuff, the jamming part gets even better because you have a guitar player to jam with. I see you looked at CL and struck out, not really just keep looking. I could easily help on the technique, jamming, and song styles but the theory and reading part...lol, no I have been playing way too many years to remember all that stuff beyond "heres a song with a bassline we need you to play in 2 days - now play it".

Hello. I grew up in the North Hills. Attended North Allegheny high school. Used to play Club Laga, Graffiti Showcase, Metropol and Nicks Fat City back in the day. Pretty sure they're all shut down now. Even tho I've lived and worked in Philly for the past 8 years, I still bleed black and gold. Can I be in the club? That would be sweet.

Nice. If you get back into town and want to play, there's usually a pickup game every friday night at Bladerunners in Warrendale.

I grew up in Cranberry Twp. Went to Seneca Valley HS and played shows all over town until 2010 when I relocated to North Carolina. You have no idea how much I miss the burgh. Primanti's is ALWAYS my first stop every time I come back.

There IS a pittburgh club here - cool!

My son took up guitar last summer and kept dragging me into the stores and I figured I'd best participate or be bored.
Never could get my fingers to function on a guitar, but a bass - that I can work with!

Still a newbie, absorbing tons and seeing steady progress. But most of all - having fun!

I guess I could be in this group, grew up in California area (around 40 miles south of Pitt). I am now going to school in Cleveland (I know, it's Cleveland) but originally from Pitt area.

From Pittsburgh, do I qualify?

I lived in Pittsburgh almost my whole life. Moved on 15 years ago. Still remember like it was yesterday. Laser Blades! We got on the Local Pittsburgh Rock Compilation in 1996, and the band broke up clear back in 1981. What happens in Pittsburgh stays in Pittsburgh, NO?

A couple of things

1 would like to see if there is any interest in a gtg here in Pittsburgh?
2 I have some great gear posted here if anyone is looking for a great bass
In particular, I have a wonderful upright I would prefer to sell locally.
Thanks
Mark

If there is much demand for a GTG, I might be able to get access to my neighborhood community center. Swisshelm Park in the east end, not too far from the Irish Center.

Hopefully we will be able to put this together I'm in Regent Square. If we get a target date we might be able to swing participation from the industry.
