Which player/band should i listen to next?

Hi everybody.

I've not been able to practice much recently as i have had a skin infection that has thinned the skin around where I play so I have to lay off for a couple of weeks so i don't end up hurting myself.

During this time, i would like to start listening to players that i haven't before.

I have listened to a lot of stuff played by Chris Squire, JPJ, John Deacon, Flea, les Claypool, Geddy Lee, Jack Bruce, Nathan East, Guy Pratt, Pino Palladino along with a bit of Bill Dickens and Billy Sheehan.

i am open to anything, especially recordings done by Bill D and Anthony Jackson with other artists and anything by artists who play 6 string a lot as this is my main bass of choice these days. I'm going to find some Vanilla Fudge as Tim bogert uses a 6 these days.

Roscoe Beck - Walk On
Marcus Miller - Silver Rain
John Mayer - Continuum (Pino on bass)
John Mayer Trio - Try! (Pino on bass)

Two records I ahve really been digging lately:

Level 42: Retroglide
Jonas Hellborg: Elegant Punk

They're both astounding pieces of work (Elegant Punk being one of the best records I've ever heard).

In fact, I don't think you can go wrong with Jonas or Mark.

Listen 2 'Graceland' by Paul Simon , the bassist is Baghiti Khumalo.

And Herbie Hancock's 'Headhunters' is always good!

I have to agree that graceland is a fantastic album and I managed to learn it (roughly) a few years back on my Ibby fretless.

Mark King is a must ( a drummer friend of mine is best mates with him from the Isle of Wight ).

I'm not a big Marcus fan. I'm afraid that he does nothing for me musically. I may as well say that Jaco does nothing for me either but this is true also.

jonas is another beast; I've never been able to find much of his work. He is a great player though from the stuff I've heard.

What stuff has Roscoe been on? I have read a lot about him but have not consciously heard him.

i really like Pino and I'm sure that there is a whole bunch of stuff that I've missed, any pointers would be most welcome.

Man, I'm listening to Guy Pratt right now and presently he is my favourite session player. ( The Floyd, One of these Days )

Man, its really horrible not being able to play. Ive just bought an Ibanez SR1006.

I gave it a good workout in the shop, got it home to play a few licks and found that my index finger had decided to open up big time. good job I have a set of TI flats on their way to replace the bloody rounds that are on it just now.
