For me it was in no particular order...
Steve Harris of Iron Maiden, Chris Squire of Yes, John Deacon of Queen, Mike Rutherford of Genesis, Geddy Lee of Rush, Andy Fraser of Free, Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath, John Entwistle of The Who, Pete Way from UFO.
anybody else?

But the bassists who were my earliest inspirations when I was first starting out, the guys who inspired me not to put the bass down once I'd already picked it up, were Chris Squire, Mel Schacher, & Stanley Clarke...plus, I suppose subliminally, Bill Wyman & John Paul Jones.
And maybe Joe Schermie. |

my parents noticed me always playing his bass

they ended up buying me a guitar
so after a year on that, i realised it wasn't a bass and made the switch

Of course, it was fine players like Abraham Laboriel, Sr. (especially), Glenn Hughes, Peter "Mars" Cowling and Leland Sklar who kept me interested.

But. The bassists who made me love playing bass and got me to where I am are:
1) Chris Squire
2) Jack Bruce
3) Jonas Hellborg
Speaking of Jack Bruce, usually when I'm trying to figure out a bass line for a song that I haven't written, I think WWJBD. Works every time. |

When I heard Sly and the Family Stone do "If You Want Me to Stay", I had to learn bass asap. I was already playing tuba in Middle school band, so I was listening to bass stuff anyway.
I took my money I had saved up mowing yards and bought a Fender Jazz the next day.
And hear I am playing the same bass 33 years later |

| | Registered User | | Join Date: Mar 2007 Location: Ashburn, Va | | | My inspiration came from my curiousness in playing some kind of musical instrument. I remember the first time I picked up a bass, I hated it!! I put it back down and was like, no way!! I want a guitar instead. Then years later, my uncle was selling his Ibanez Roadstar II, amp and some effects. I was hooked from that point on.
But after I got into, the players that inspired me were first- Les Claypool and second- Flea. As I have grown into more of a typical bass player role, I would say Jamerson, Steffan Lessard and all of the guys who just lay it down.
Peace,
Chris
