a jazz bass would be good to use especially since you HAVE to use the bridge pickup to get the sound. Use nicklewound roundwound strings and im not sure whether it would be better to use active or passive pickups.....use more MID and BASS rather than TREBLE but try not to use any amplifications (aside from volume, gain, ect) so....use the bridge pickup, a little bit of Mid, and use nicklewound roundwounds.

I think most of what you're hearing is that guy trying to kill his bass with a pick. I think most of his sound is in his playing. Thanks for this post, I haven't heard any Poison Idea I miss these guys. Great early hardcore. Good luck.

also been trying to kill my amp or actually make it cut out since i had that problem last weekend(kill kill kill

Yeah, that's definitely the tone of a crappy bass played to within of its life, through a crappy amp within an inch of blowing up.

Interestingly enough, I've been able to get pretty close to that kind of tone with flats and a Markbass.

I have a mexican p bass and a ****** old carvin cabinet that sounds like its going to blow up I think it only has one 18" speaker maybe smaller but it has almost no highs. I've just been playing with my tone all the way down and a pick but I have a set of flats im thinking of throwing on because this sounds so gross its beautiful and that's what im going for. Can anyone tell if he's playing flatwounds?

Sounds like flatwounds to me, but it's impossible to tell. You can get this sound on almost any bass being bashed with a thick, heavy pick. I have shredded light picks on roundwound strings, so if you plan on playing like this for more than 30 seconds, you probably want flatwounds. Rotosound and D'Addario chromes have a very steely sound when new, and actually sound great played like this.
