Positive Michael Anthony Thread

Sign in to disble this ad
The reunion thread had me revisiting the VH discography, and Michael Anthony REALLy is the perfect fit for that band. I have questions though. Does he play with a pick or finger? what basses did he use?
I heard he used Yamaha a lot, do they rock as hard as Fenders?
DISCUSS.

Most of the times I remember seeing MA he was using his fingers. He is known for using Yamahas but he also played Fenders. (Watch the live video for Unchained)

his solo is so lame..just making noise by pounding the bass
his voice was more important to VH than his bass playing

great back up singer, lousy bassist imo

I like Michael Anthony's playing. Very solid, not flashy, some cool, non flashy fills here and there and his vocals are killer.

I read in an interview when "For Unlawful..." was released that he prefers to use both fingers and pick depending on the sound he was searching for and how it sounded in the song.

He used both but i think he used a pick more in the earlier recordings...i agree with nino MA's playing is very solid....if you really listen to his lines he does not just play just straight root notes the whole song

I have some live bootlegs of VH from way back....early stuff in L.A., before they released the debut....and M.A. is doing some great stuff....much more than he ever did on the recordings.....wild player. Really all over the neck type stuff.

EVH really slammed Michael in an
interview years ago (1982 I think)
saying he contributed nothing to
the group.

EVH is brillant no doubt but
man what an arrogant t*rd.
Eddie now reminds me of the
Geico caveman with a shave.

Yes, I've read that alot of the time, Eddie would go back into the studio and redo M.A.'s bass lines.....

Why the hell would anyone hate on Michael Anthony? His backing vocals are a key of the band's sound, and I actually really like his bass playing. He's not Geddy by any means, but really, I can't think of anything I would do differently with his songs, and he just makes me feel awesome when I see him having a ball up on stage.

And the Jack Daniels bass is sweet.

I grew up on VH 1. MA's playing was a great fit for most VH recordings. He is a great rock bassist, no more no less.

For those who think he sucks, what kind of bass line would you come up with in the Van Halen context? He held the bottom very well & let Eddie solo away.

It's rock not jazz fusion.

Michael Anthony doesn't suck. Nobody will ever mistake him for Billy Sheehan, but I've seen him live in 1980, and he played all the parts well, had good timing, and sang beautifully. Plus, try playing "Poundcake" in time if you think he sucks. On the other hand, Alex VH ruined the show. He rushed and couldn't even count 4 solidly. He has trouble keeping steady time to this day. I think Michael Anthony gets a bad rap because of Eddie's idiot comments about his playing. The guy who ruins the band is Alex, not Michael.

Anthony is one of those bassists who comes to mind when I think of rock solid timekeeping and playing. Not much flash, but he doesn't need it.

I get the impression that in a different context, he'd be more of an Entwhistle/Jack Bruce type player. He once said he'd like to play more flashy stuff, but he would be butting heads with Eddie (to which I say, well Cream did it!) I challenge any player to play in any style and sing those high harmonies that he does.

Anybody remember that Bass Player Magazine article where he talked about hanging out with Jaco in a hotel bar in Tokyo? That would have been pretty cool.

Hahaha.... it cracks me up when forum posters start criticizing professional players. It reminds me of the frequent Adam Clayton bashing around here.

Mike is a critical part of VH, no question. Solid player, unpretentious, great stage presence, excellent vocals. This is as bad as losing Diamond Dave in the 80's. The band is a sorry excuse at this point, somebody please tell Eddie to fade into obscurity gracefully.

This just reeks.

I like Mike.

His "solo" is embarrasing.

His vocals are fantastic.

His bass playing is competent.

His on-stage personna is excellent.

+1 he did hold down a solid groove.

On occasion, he would do a solo during a concert, the man can shred even though you never heard it on any of the albums. I do not know why he is not playing for the reunion, but it is Van Halen's loss.
