Does anyone really dig the bass in a lot of these bands? I'm talking about the likes of Joy Division, Gang of Four, Public Image, Elvis Costello, Talking Heads, A Certain Ratio etc? I'm loving all this stuff atm

Love 'em.

I regularly play around with stuff by the above, especially JD, ACR and PiL.

Dave Allen from the Go4 was/is a great im my book. His stuff on 'Entertainment' is sooooo cool.

Anhy idea what bass DA played on those records?

I really suggest checking out early Stranglers, XTC, Magazine,The Fall (up till about '94).

Some great stuff there, and IMHO, the last time British bands actually bothered to move things past The Beatles. I may be from this side of the pond, but pretty much all the bands and artists I love come from the US.....such a wealth of styles!

Sorry, back to OP - great to see these bands mentioned, as even over here, stuff like ACR never get even the smallest of a mention.

You've got to check out early Section 25 - first album, 'Always Now' - Hannett-produced, and classic Manchester post-punk....doomy, and bass-driven, very JD esque. (Actually, their first single was co-produced by Ian Curtis).

Great stuff - I learned to play bass while listening to Elvis Costello & the Attractions, XTC, Gang of Four, Ian Dury and the Blockheads, the Jam, the Clash...

I'm sure if you joined us at the Post-Punk/New Wave Bassists Club you'll find lots of folks who dig these bassists.
